Menengai Crater is practically next door to Sheerdrop. The second largest volcanic caldera in Africa, and most people in Nakuru have never walked to the rim.

Take the family up in the morning when it is cool. The trail is manageable for older kids. The views from the top stretch across the entire Rift Valley floor -- you can see Lake Nakuru on one side and the escarpment on the other.

Bring water. Bring a camera. Bring the uncle who says he is fit but will be breathing hard by the halfway point.

You will be back at the house by lunchtime with sore legs and a hundred photos. The kind of morning that costs nothing but gives you everything.

Today you pack the car. Load the bags. Do one last check of every room because someone always leaves a charger behind.

Before you drive out, stand at the gate for a minute. Look back at the house. The terrace where you had chai every morning. The lawn where the kids played until dark. The kitchen where everyone crowded in and somehow made it work.

You are not taking the view with you. You are not taking the quiet mornings or the Rift Valley sunsets. But you are taking something better.

Your daughter learned to play chess this holiday. Your son made friends with the gardener. Your mother sat on that terrace every evening and smiled in a way you had not seen in months. Your family ate together, laughed together, argued together, and remembered why they like each other.

That is what you are taking home. See you next holiday.

Thomson Falls is about an hour and a half from Sheerdrop, up in Nyahururu. It is one of those places that makes you stop and stare.

The waterfall drops 74 metres into a gorge below. The spray catches the light and on a good day there is a rainbow sitting right in the middle of it. The kids will want to climb down to the bottom. Let them, if they are old enough. The path is steep but manageable.

The town of Nyahururu is the highest town in Kenya. The air is crisp. The drive there takes you through farmland and forest. Stop for tea at one of the roadside places and watch the world go by at a pace that Nairobi has forgotten.

One more adventure before the holidays end. Make it count.

The holidays are winding down. You can feel it. The suitcases are starting to appear. Someone mentioned homework.

But not today. Today, you are still at Sheerdrop. The valley is still outside the window. The kids are still playing on the lawn. The kitchen still smells like last night's dinner.

Sit on the terrace one more time. Watch the clouds move across the crater. Listen to the sounds you have gotten used to -- the birds, the wind, the kids laughing somewhere in the compound.

You came here tired. Stretched thin. Running on fumes from a term that went on too long. And now look at you. Rested. Present. Actually enjoying your children instead of managing them.

That is what the countryside does. It gives you back to yourself.

Nakuru town is 12km from Sheerdrop. Close enough for a morning run to the market. Far enough that you feel like you are in the countryside.

Take the family to the municipal market. Let the kids see where the food comes from. Buy fresh vegetables, fruit, and eggs from the mama who has been selling there for thirty years. Walk through the streets and stop for samosas at that corner shop everyone in Nakuru knows about.

It is not a tourist attraction. It is real life. And your kids will learn more in one morning at Nakuru market than they will in a week of holiday camps.

Come back to Sheerdrop with bags full of fresh produce and a plan for dinner that involves everyone in the kitchen.

At some point during the holiday, someone needs to say it. "Let us take a proper family photo."

Not a selfie. Not a blurry one where someone blinked. A proper one. Everyone together. At Sheerdrop, the backdrop does the work for you -- the house, the gardens, the Rift Valley stretching out behind.

Line everyone up on the steps. Tell the kids to stand still for ten seconds. Watch Baba fix his collar. Watch Cucu tell everyone to move closer. Take fifteen shots because someone was always looking the wrong way.

You will print one. Frame it. Put it in the sitting room at home. And twenty years from now, your kids will look at it and remember this holiday. Not the details. The feeling.

Take the photo.

Lake Baringo is about two and a half hours from Sheerdrop. If your family likes birds, water, and adventure, this is the day trip.

Take a boat ride on the lake. The boatman will point out fish eagles, herons, kingfishers -- over 400 bird species live around Baringo. You will see hippos in the water and crocodiles sunning on the rocks. The kids will be thrilled and terrified in equal measure.

Stop at one of the islands for a walk. Have fish for lunch at a lakeside restaurant -- tilapia straight from the lake, fried the way it should be.

It is a longer drive, so leave early and make a day of it. The road through Marigat is an adventure on its own. Come back to Sheerdrop tired, full, and with enough stories for a week.

Friday night at Sheerdrop. The entertainment room. A 55-inch screen. And the most important family debate of the holiday: what are we watching.

The teenagers want action. The little ones want animation. Baba wants a documentary. Mama just wants everyone to stop arguing and pick something.

Someone makes popcorn in the kitchen. Someone else brings the blankets from upstairs. The couch fits more people than it should. And by the time the movie starts, half the room is already asleep but nobody turns it off because the other half is finally quiet.

This is Friday night. No restaurant. No traffic. No bill at the end. Just your people, a screen, and enough popcorn to last two movies.

Lord Egerton Castle is about 14km from Sheerdrop. A castle. In Nakuru. Most people do not even know it exists.

Built in the 1950s by an eccentric British settler, it has 52 rooms, a ballroom, and enough history to keep the whole family interested for a couple of hours. The kids will love exploring the rooms. The adults will love the architecture. Everyone will have questions nobody can answer.

The grounds are green and spacious. Good for a picnic after the tour. And the drive there takes you through the Egerton University campus, which is worth a look on its own.

A morning out, a bit of history, and back to Sheerdrop for lunch. Not every day trip needs to be a five-hour expedition.

At Sheerdrop, sunset is not something that happens in the background. It is the main event.

Every evening, around half six, the sky over the Rift Valley starts changing. Orange, then pink, then that deep red that makes everyone stop what they are doing and walk to the terrace.

The kids come running. Someone grabs a phone for a photo that will never do it justice. Cucu says "Mungu ni mwema" and everyone agrees. The valley floor goes dark while the sky is still burning and for five minutes, nobody says anything.

Then someone asks what is for dinner and the moment is over. But it happened. And it will happen again tomorrow. And the day after. That is the thing about Sheerdrop -- the sunsets do not run out.

Lake Bogoria is about two hours north of Sheerdrop. It is worth every minute of the drive.

Hot springs bubbling out of the ground. Geysers shooting steam into the air. Thousands of flamingoes lining the shore in pink. Your kids will stand at the edge of a hot spring and not believe that the water is actually boiling.

The drive up takes you through Subukia Valley, which is beautiful on its own. Pack breakfast for the road. Spend the morning at the lake. Let the kids dip their feet in the warm streams that run off from the springs.

Drive back through Mogotio, stop for roast maize on the roadside, and be home at Sheerdrop by late afternoon. A proper adventure without leaving the Rift Valley.
