that the Nubian woodpecker doesn’t just drum—it also has a sharp, piercing call that often comes as a duet between a pair. You’ll usually hear it as a fast, excited exchange, almost like two birds talking over each other.

This “keek” call is all about connection and coordination:

* Pair bonding – mates calling back and forth to stay in sync
* Territory marking – a loud “we’re here” announcement to other woodpeckers
* Locating each other – especially when moving through thick trees

What makes it special is the duet effect. Instead of one bird calling alone, the pair creates a kind of overlapping rhythm—slightly chaotic, very loud, and surprisingly coordinated if you listen closely.

And unlike their drumming (which travels through surfaces), this call cuts straight through the air, carrying over long distances. It’s why you can hear them before you ever spot them.

So if you hear that energetic “keek-keek-keek!” echoing around , chances are you’re witnessing a Nubian woodpecker couple checking in with each other—loudly, proudly, and completely unbothered by who’s listening. 🌿http://airbnb.com/h/whistlingthornsolpejeta

My second visitor at this morning (the first was the usual Nubian Woodpecker). The curious little visitor is a Black-lored Babbler dropping by my bedroom window—and clearly, it had questions.

With those striking pale eyes and that signature head tilt, black-lored babblers are known for their inquisitive nature. They move in lively groups, chattering constantly as they forage through shrubs and gardens for insects and small treats. But every now and then, one pauses… just long enough to peer in and check out your world too.

This one lingered, tapping lightly and studying its reflection—as if deciding whether to come in or invite me out.

Mornings at Whistling Thorns always come with a little wild curiosity at the window. If you are a bird 🐦 watcher, you will certainly love it here! You can book us through http://airbnb.com/h/whistlingthornsolpejeta

Our quiet little visitor today is — the Grey-capped Social Weaver 🤍

Soft grey crown, sandy feathers, and always on the move. She’s not as colorful as many other birds we’ve spotted here, but her species is quite interesting. True to its name, this weaver thrives in community. These birds are master architects, building large, communal nests that house entire families, often tucked into acacia trees across the Laikipia landscape. There’s something special about knowing that just beyond this quiet moment, there’s likely a whole bustling colony not far away. Simple moments like this are what make this place special.

At Whistling Thorns Ol Pejeta, one of our most vocal (and entertaining) residents is the White-bellied go-away bird — a bird you’ll often hear before you see.

With its soft grey plumage, striking white belly, and signature upright crest, this elegant tree-dweller blends beautifully into the acacia woodland around us. In flight, flashes of white on its wings and tail give it away, while its long tail helps it glide effortlessly from tree to tree.

But what truly makes this bird unforgettable is its call — a loud, nasal “gwaaay!” that sounds like it’s telling you exactly what to do… go away! It’s a sound that echoes across the property, especially in the early mornings and late afternoons.

These birds are highly social and rarely alone. They move in lively family groups, often up to 10 members, hopping, climbing, and calling to each other as they patrol their territory. And right here at Whistling Thorns, we’re lucky to have a large, bustling family settled in the nearby tree forest — a constant presence adding life and character to the landscape.

When it comes to food, they’re mostly plant lovers. Their diet includes fruits, flowers, seeds, and buds — especially from acacia trees — though they’ll occasionally snack on insects like termites. Agile climbers, they spend most of their time high in the canopy, foraging with ease.

Curious, noisy, and full of personality, the white-bellied go-away bird is one of those species that quickly becomes part of your stay — a reminder that here, nature isn’t just seen… it’s heard, felt, and lived. To book your stay with us, call/text +254786485538 vacationrental
