The lion are always active here and our guests see them most regularly of all the cats. They choose the deep valleys and luggahs to raise their young and then come out onto the more open tops of plains to teach them how to hunt. Yesterday the sky was clear blue and the moon full and far-away looking. The grass has yellowed now after several months of no rain and it rustles and crackles when the wind blows before dusk. I will never tire of watching these creatures as they lounge on termite mounds, slow blinking and yawning at last light. When they start to move there is a gradual momentum build as you watch and see them begin to think about the hunt. Our nights are filled with roars this week as the pride moves around the conservancy seeing the plentiful prey around them. Each morning we wonder what we will find and see, there is always something to wonder at, no day the same, no season a formula. This wild life that people come to visit is like nothing else in the world…there is no amount of AI that could generate the feeling and smell of dry grass, dust wind and gloaming light. These safaris - providing we resist the Western urge to bring all the accoutrements of comfort and allow the wild to pervade the Safari will always remain if these spaces remain… El Karama Lodge, Laikipia El Karama Wild

We may be lucky enough to share this corner of Laikipia with lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo — but for us, your safari is about so much more than a checklist.

It’s our home grown food picked from the Shamba. It’s Long, unhurried days outside watching Elephant at the dam and experiencing freedom on foot, on horses and under canvas. It’s feeling that you are in a home being cared for by experienced people who know this land intimately. It’s the warmth and individuality that comes from staying somewhere that is still proudly owner-run that represents the vision and hopefulness of a family who are embedded in a landscape. Our offering is an extension of our values, our personalities and our culture and when you visit that is what you feel from the books on the shelves, the paintings on the wall and the hand carved, home spun nature of the place.

At El Karama, the wild isn’t something we take you out to see. It’s all around you, it is where we live and its how we connect to the world around us. Quiet, connected luxury in the heart of Laikipia El Karama Lodge, Laikipia and El Karama Wild on El Karama Wildlife Conservancy

World Ranger Day is an opportunity to salute the tireless, skilled and often invisible work done by these men and women working on the frontlines of conservation. Working in wildlife zones is complex, it requires specific skillsets and much long term training. Murray and I have had the privilege of meeting and workinf with many inspirational rangers in Kenya in different eco systems and we are always humbled by their dedication and humility considering without them conservation would be impossible El Karama Lodge, Laikipia El Karama Wild

Leopard sightings today. During a two year period back in 2022 we used mirrors and camera traps to try to get images and create IDs of Leopard on El Karama with the El Karama Lodge, Laikipia El Karama Wild guide team. The results were astounding. Over just 9,000 pf the full 15,000 acres we found 15 different Leopard and Leopardesses during that time and those were only the ones who happened to pass the mirrors and have their photos taken. Since our Lion population has exploded and the Elephant in Laikipia have destroyed broad so many broad canopy trees, the Leopard activity has changed. They are even more elusive, maintaining distance, staying in the rockier escarpments and along the river, away from the central plains where the Lions hold court. This makes these sightings even more special. Your best chance of seeing Leopard here? Around the full moon 🌝, in the evenings, staying quiet and still and waiting for alarm calls, watching and being patiently observant with your guide. One of the most exciting animals to have the privilege of seeing in this eco system 🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆 El Karama Lodge, Laikipia El Karama Wild Robinson Emungasi El Karama Wildlife Conservancy

Aardvark. Elusive, nocturnal animals who feed on ants and termites with their long, sticky tongues. They thrive in grasslands and their burrows are sometimes used by other animals including warthog, porcupine and even wild dog. So you could say that they are indicators of a biodiverse eco system that include with healthy grasslands, abundant insect life and diverse wildlife species…catching images of them on the nighttime cameras is always exciting and finding them living so close to the Lodge is such a wonderful thing… El Karama Lodge, Laikipia El Karama Wild

Indoor- outdoor living is what makes life in camp so relaxing. Hearing the bush sounds from your bed, feeling the breeze flow through the rooms, thatch roofs, hand-cut stone, family happily milling around the pool and exploring different parts of the Lodge through the day. Meals set up under the stars, by the fire and in the open air. Nothing tastes better and no one sleeps better than in this natural rhythm El Karama Lodge, Laikipia El Karama Wild
