When the school run turns into a safari.

Today, on the way to school, we came across two young male lions feeding on a wildebeest. No camera with us — just our usual morning school run, and a few photos with the phone.

On the way back, one was still feeding. His brother had settled down nearby. So I went back to Camp, picked up the camera, and returned.

They were still there.

No line of safari vehicles. No rush. No crowd. Just two young lions, a wildebeest, some elands and impalas far away, and the quiet of the morning.

For a family living in the bush, this is everyday life. The school run can become a safari. Sometimes, the most extraordinary moments happen when you aren't looking for them.

We feel privileged to live where wildlife is simply part of the landscape — and where we can stop, watch, and let the animals carry on with their lives.

Because perhaps one of the greatest luxuries in safari isn't seeing more wildlife. It's having the space to experience it quietly.

Cuando el camino al colegio se convierte en un safari.

Hoy, de camino al colegio, nos encontramos con dos jóvenes leones macho comiendo un ñu. No llevábamos la cámara — solo nuestro trayecto habitual y unas fotos con el teléfono.

A la vuelta, uno seguía comiendo. Su hermano ya descansaba cerca. Así que volví al Campamento, cogí la cámara y regresé.

Seguían allí. Sin una fila de vehículos de safari. Sin prisas. Sin gente alrededor. Solo dos jóvenes leones, un ñu, algunos elands e impalas a lo lejos y la tranquilidad de la mañana.

Para una familia que vive en plena naturaleza, esto es parte de la vida cotidiana. El camino al colegio es el primer safari del día. A veces, los momentos más extraordinarios ocurren cuando no los buscas.

Nos sentimos privilegiados de vivir donde la fauna forma parte del paisaje — y donde podemos parar, observar y dejar que los animales sigan con su vida.

Porque quizá uno de los mayores lujos de un safari no sea ver más animales. Sino tener el espacio para disfrutarlos en silencio.

🇬🇧 Not everything that moves in the Maasai Mara roars. 🌙

At 10:30 pm, while the camp was quiet and everyone was asleep, one of our camera traps caught a very special visitor moving through Enkopiro.

An African civet. 🐾

But what is a civet?
A solitary, mostly nocturnal mammal, about the size of a large dog, with a beautifully marked coat, long tail and distinctive face. It quietly moves through the grass and bush at night, feeding on insects, small animals and fruit.

It isn't endangered — the species is classified as Least Concern — but seeing one in the wild is an uncommon safari encounter because of its secretive nocturnal life.

And this is what we love about a private conservancy.

A safari isn't only about the Big Five. Sometimes it's about the animals you weren't looking for, the ones that appear when nobody is watching.

The Mara ecosystem is much bigger than the National Reserve, and both the Reserve and the conservancies play an important role in protecting it, supporting communities and creating space for wildlife.

A win-win for wildlife, communities and travellers. 🌿

A las 22:30, mientras el campamento dormía, una de nuestras cámaras trampa captó a un visitante muy especial moviéndose por Enkopiro.

Una civeta africana. 🐾

Un mamífero solitario y principalmente nocturno, aproximadamente del tamaño de un perro grande, que se mueve silenciosamente entre la hierba y la vegetación durante la noche.

No está en peligro de extinción — está clasificada como Preocupación Menor — pero verla en libertad es un encuentro poco habitual.

Y esto es lo que nos encanta de una conservancy privada: el safari es mucho más que los Big Five.

A veces, los encuentros más especiales son precisamente los que no estábamos buscando.

Some memories are left behind.
One afternoon at Enkopiro, .ggarciaa sat quietly by the fire and began to paint.
She captured the place as she experienced it — the trees, the fire, the light, the warmth and the stillness.

Minutes later, she gave us her little watercolour as a memory of her time at Enkopiro.

We keep it as a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful travel moments are the simplest ones.

Having the time to stop. To observe. To feel.
And to leave something behind.

Maybe safari isn't about seeing more. Maybe it's about seeing differently. 🌿

We have become used to travelling fast: one camp, then another; one flight, then another; ticking off sightings and moving on. But what happens when we slow down?

When you stay longer in one place, the experience begins to change. You recognise the landscape. Your guide gets to know what fascinates you. You start noticing the smaller things — the sounds, the tracks, the changing light, the rhythm of the wildlife. At Enkopiro, this is the kind of safari we believe in.
A safari with more time. More connection. More understanding.
Because meaningful luxury isn't necessarily about having more. Sometimes, it is simply about having the time to be fully present.

Quizás un safari no consiste en ver más. Quizás consiste en mirar de otra manera. 🌿

Nos hemos acostumbrado a viajar deprisa: un campamento, después otro; un vuelo, después otro; acumulando avistamientos y siguiendo adelante. Pero, ¿qué ocurre cuando bajamos el ritmo?

Cuando permaneces más tiempo en un mismo lugar, la experiencia empieza a cambiar. Reconoces el paisaje. Tu guía llega a conocer lo que realmente te interesa. Empiezas a descubrir los pequeños detalles: los sonidos, las huellas, la luz que cambia, el ritmo de la fauna.

En Enkopiro creemos en este tipo de safari. Un safari con más tiempo. Más conexión. Más comprensión. Porque el lujo con significado no consiste necesariamente en tener más. A veces, el verdadero lujo es simplemente disponer del tiempo para estar plenamente presente.

It started with a few women, a vision, and their own hands.

This manyatta was built together with Maasai mamas to create a place where they can showcase and sell their beadwork — keeping traditional skills alive while creating a source of income and opportunity.

We believe the most meaningful projects are not about doing things for communities, but about creating the space, tools and opportunities for communities to build their own future.

What you see here is a small project.

But when a place to work becomes a place to earn, when a traditional skill becomes a livelihood, and when women have greater control over their own income, the impact reaches much further than the walls of a manyatta.

This is what Deep Impact means to us.

Todo empezó con unas mujeres, una idea y sus propias manos.

Esta manyatta la construyeron las mamas Maasai para crear un espacio donde puedan mostrar y vender sus trabajos de artesanía con cuentas —manteniendo vivas sus habilidades tradicionales y, al mismo tiempo, creando una fuente de ingresos y oportunidades.

Creemos que los proyectos más significativos no consisten en hacer cosas por las comunidades, sino en crear espacios, herramientas y oportunidades para que sean ellas mismas quienes construyan su futuro.

Last night, beneath a sky scattered with stars, we became part of a story far older than ourselves.

In the darkness, a lion fed on a giraffe while more than ten hyenas waited patiently at the edge of the night. No engines. No crowds. No distractions. Only the rhythm of the wild and the quiet tension that comes when every sound, every glance, every movement matters.

We listened. We watched. We felt the pulse of nature unfold exactly as it has for thousands of years.

These are the moments that stay with you long after the safari ends. Moments that remind us that true wilderness is not something to consume, but something to humbly witness.

Far from the crowds, in the heart of Ololasurai, there is still a place where darkness is truly dark, where silence speaks, and where nature remains wonderfully untamed.

And under those stars, surrounded by the sounds of the night, you cannot help but feel grateful for the privilege of simply being there.

Anoche, bajo un cielo sembrado de estrellas, nos convertimos en parte de una historia mucho más antigua que nosotros.

En la oscuridad, un león se alimentaba de una jirafa mientras más de diez hienas esperaban pacientemente. Sin motores. Sin multitudes. Sin distracciones. Sólo el ritmo de la naturaleza y la silenciosa tensión que surge cuando cada sonido, cada mirada y cada movimiento importan.

Durante largos minutos escuchamos. Observamos. Sentimos como la vida salvaje seguía su curso, igual que lo ha hecho durante miles de años.

Take Olngonguenyi ( Ongogenyi or Acacia kirkii )—not just a tree, but a healer. For generations, the Maasai have turned to it and countless others for immunity, ailments, and survival
