Our community team's efforts in mitigating human-wildlife conflict in the Mara involve putting up recycled plastic pole bomas (livestock enclosures). MPCP staff visits all the bomas organized for the purchase of materials and ensures they are constructed by boma experts to guarantee quality works.

We put up 30 bomas in three different conflict hotspots across the Mara with support from WWF-Kenya and Nature Kenya-the EANHS in 2020. MPCP staff worked closely with a representative of WWF, and managers/Community liaison officers from Siana, Olare Motorogi, and Oloisukut conservancies to identify the most affected/vulnerable bomas for reinforcing. 17 bomas have been put up in Siana, 11 bomas in Oloisukut, 1 boma in Enkeju Enkoirien, and 1 in Talek.

After the construction of the bomas using recycled plastic poles, our team installs camera traps in them. This helps us assess their effectiveness in deterring predators from attacking livestock at night. The cameras have been installed in bomas at Meguarra, Empopong'i, Oloolchurra, Ngila, Partakilat, Saparingo, and Oloisukut.

Camp Story

Encounter Mara joined Asilia Africa in 2015 to become our second camp within the Mara Naboisho Conservancy, a groundbreaking cooperative development model. We are proud to be one of the driving forces behind the conservancy, the creation of which saw over 500 Maasai landowners coming together to contribute their land to conservation. The conservancy fees provide the Maasai community with a sustainable livelihood and ensure the conservation of the wildlife in this vital corridor of the Maasai Mara ecosystem. It also provides steady and sustainable employment, which we hope will lead to an improved standard of living for the community as a whole. The conservancy offers additional benefits like healthcare, clean energy and empowerment of the local people through education and skills training. All our guides are trained at Koiyaki Guiding School, which runs on charitable donations and aims to provide conservation livelihoods for members of the communities around the Naboisho conservancy. With our increased footprint in the Mara Naboisho Conservancy, we intend to continue to build stability in the conservancy, as well as turn our attention to the neighbouring Pardamat Block, a vital corridor for the Loita Wildebeest Migration as well as a suitable elephant habitat that is currently not protected.
