Why you shouldn’t stay here. We have 5 villas, no beach access, à working farm with insects and a restaurant that doesn’t do buffets. Still interested? Read on. Tulia Eco Garden sits on Diani Hills, 7km from Diani beach, on a hillside wrapped in wild tropical forest with panoramic views of the Diani coastline. Not on the beach. Not near the town. On purpose. We are small. Quiet. Unhurried. Refe’s Kitchen, our restaurant, is à La carte. Every meal is shaped by what our 5-acre farm produces—dragon fruit, Moringa, sugarcane, raspberries, organic eggs… The menu follows the harvest. If you made it this far, Tulia is probably for you.

I have hundreds of photos of hotel meals I cannot remember eating.
Not vaguely remember. Actually cannot tell you if they were good. I remember the light. I remember rotating the plate slightly to fix the fork placement. I remember the specific anxiety of the sauce starting to separate before I got the shot.
I do not remember the taste.
At some point I stopped having the meal and started documenting it instead. And the worst part is I am not entirely sure who the photos were even for. My family thinks I am "doing a blog." I am not doing a blog.
My first evening at Tulia, I took out my phone out of habit. Dinner arrived. Hot, clearly just made, and I raised the phone. And then I put it down. Not because of hotel policy. Because photographing it suddenly felt like the wrong response. Like applauding in the middle of a sentence.
I ate it instead. It tasted like it was made just for me. I knew where the garden was. I was just — there.
I came home with exactly one photo from the whole trip. Taken on the last morning, almost by accident, because I wanted to rather than because I felt I had to.
That is a very different feeling. I had forgotten it existed.
