This World Elephant Day Month, Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is celebrating ten extraordinary years of community-led conservation. In just a decade, Reteti has rescued more than 170 orphaned elephants, reunited families, and helped four herds take their first steps back to the wild. 🌿🐘

Built to care for 45 orphaned calves, Reteti is currently home to 48 elephants while welcoming around 15 new arrivals each year. As climate change, drought, and human-wildlife conflict intensify across Northern Kenya, so does the need for rescue, rehabilitation, and rewilding.

To meet this growing need, Reteti is raising funds to build a second Indigenous-led elephant sanctuary near Mount Ololokwe. This new sanctuary will allow the team to rescue and care for more orphaned baby elephants, creating the space they need to heal, grow, and thrive while strengthening the communities and landscapes that support their return to the wild.

This World Elephant Day Month, we are celebrating the gentle giants that shape Northern Kenya’s wild spaces and sharing a few fascinating facts that might just make you love them even more.

🫶🏽 Baby elephants sometimes suck their trunks for comfort, just as human babies suck their thumbs.

🐘 Elephants can “hear” with their feet. They communicate using low-frequency rumbles that travel through the ground, where other elephants detect the vibrations through specialised receptors in their feet.

🤿 Elephants are strong swimmers and can use their trunks like a snorkel while crossing deep water.

🩶 An elephant pregnancy lasts around 22 months - the longest gestation of any land mammal.

🌱 Elephants are a keystone species. By dispersing seeds, creating water holes and keeping plains open, they help shape healthy ecosystems that support countless other species.

🌍 Elephants are among the most intelligent creatures on the planet. They show compassion, empathy, self-awareness and grief, recognising and responding to one another’s emotions.

If there is one experience that captures the heart of elephant conservation, it’s a visit to Elephant Sanctuary. Watching the orphaned calves charge towards their milk bottles, splash through muddy puddles and play with their friends is unforgettable. But what stays with you most is witnessing the bond between the Samburu keepers and the elephants. With incredible patience, dedication and love, they raise each calf as their own until they are ready to return home to the wild 🌿

Chosen from hundreds of nominations, this accolade celebrates Indigenous-led conservation and sustainable tourism that are creating lasting benefits for people, wildlife, and nature. Following the inclusion of Camp and Elephant Sanctuary in 2025, this year’s recognition celebrates the wider landscape, communities, and partnerships that make this work possible.

This honour belongs to the Namunyak community, whose leadership, compassion and commitment continue to show the world that conservation is strongest when it is led by the people who call these landscapes home.

We are looking for a Reservations and Sales Officer to join our team in Nanyuki. This is a dynamic, sales-focused role where you will guide guests from their very first enquiry through to a confirmed booking, while working closely with travel partners around the world and helping showcase everything that makes so special.

If you are proactive, commercially minded, highly organised, and passionate about community-led conservation and meaningful travel, we would love to hear from you.

This is a Nanyuki-based role, applicants must already be based in Nanyuki or be willing to relocate.
