Elephant Bedroom Camp. Where the north gets under your skin. 🌴

There is something about Elephant Bedroom that guests struggle to articulate and never quite stop trying to.

It is partly the setting - the Ewaso Nyiro River moving below the camp, doum palms catching the light, the red earth of Samburu stretching out in every direction with that particular northern intensity that feels unlike anywhere else in Kenya.

It is partly the wildlife. The Samburu Specials found almost nowhere else on Earth. The elephants at the river before breakfast. The predators that the dry season draws to the water in numbers that consistently exceed expectation.

But mostly it is the feeling of the place. Small enough to feel genuinely personal. Wild enough to feel genuinely remote. Warm enough to feel, very quickly, like somewhere you belong.

There is more to Mbweha than you might expect. A lot more. 🌿

Game drives into Lake Nakuru National Park at dawn, where rhinos move through the acacia woodland and flamingos gather on the alkaline shore. Cycle rides through the Soysambu Conservancy, where the pace slows down and the landscape reveals itself differently from two wheels. Camel riding across open grassland with the Rift Valley escarpment on the horizon. Bush walks that put you directly in the landscape rather than alongside it. Sundowners on the escarpment edge as the lake below turns pink and the Eburru Hills catch the last light.

And then back to camp. The lava-stone cottages. The team that has thought of everything. The chef who will absolutely not let you down.

The agama lizard. The most colourful thing in the bush that nobody talks about enough. 🦎

You've seen them. Darting across rocks, perching on termite mounds, doing rapid push-ups in the sun. But do you know what you're actually looking at?

The male agama is one of the most vividly coloured reptiles in Africa - a bright orange or red head, electric blue body, and a tail that seems almost too bold for something that lives in the dust. And those colours are not decorative. The intensity of a male's colouring directly reflects his dominance and health. The brighter the head, the higher his status. Colour is the agama's CV, social rank, and dating profile all at once.

Those rapid head bobs and push-up displays you see on rocks and termite mounds are territorial signalling, a warning to rival males and a performance for females simultaneously. An agama doing push-ups is not exercising. He is making a very specific point to a very specific audience.

The females, meanwhile, are deliberately understated - brown, cryptic, built for camouflage rather than display. She watches the males perform and makes her choice quietly. The biology of this arrangement has not gone unnoticed by our guides.

Small, colourful, and running an extremely dramatic social life on every rock across our camps. Next time you walk past one, look twice.

Four landscapes. One country. No filter needed. 🌍

Kenya does not do subtle.

Every ecosystem we call home has its own completely distinct character - its own light, its own palette, its own way of stopping you mid-sentence and making you forget what you were about to say.

The red earth and silver river of Samburu, where the doum palms cast long shadows and the north feels ancient in a way you feel in your bones. The drama of the Great Rift Valley at Mbweha, where the escarpment drops away beneath you and the scale of the landscape makes everything feel very small and very exact. The snow-capped outline of Kilimanjaro at dawn above the Amboseli plains, appearing through the cloud like something from another world. The wide, golden expanse of the Masai Mara at the height of the Migration, when the horizon moves because it is made of wildebeest. The Mara and Talek Rivers meeting at Ngenche, turning copper at sundowner hour while the hippos do their thing below.

Four completely different answers to the question of what Kenya looks like.

Nature is extraordinary. It is also not always comfortable. This is both. 🦁

We want to be upfront: this video contains scenes of nature in its most honest form. A warthog killed by the pride. And afterwards - the cubs.

Because this is the thing about spending real time in the wild. It does not curate itself for you. The Masai Mara is not a wildlife documentary with carefully chosen moments. It is an ecosystem running on the logic of survival - raw, complex, and entirely indifferent to our feelings about it.

And within that reality, there are moments that are genuinely difficult to watch and genuinely impossible to look away from. The cubs - still learning what it means to be lions - curious, playful, and completely matter-of-fact about something that would stop most of us in our tracks.

Our guides don't steer you away from these moments. They sit with you in them, explain what you're watching, and let the wild be exactly what it is.

The gerenuk. Samburu's most gravity-defying resident.

If you have never seen a gerenuk standing on its hind legs, reaching into a thorn bush with the composure of someone who does this every day, you are missing one of the great sights of northern Kenya.

The gerenuk, whose name comes from the Somali word for 'giraffe-necked', is a gazelle that has taken a completely different evolutionary path from its relatives. While other gazelles graze or browse at shrub level, the gerenuk developed an elongated neck, longer legs, and the ability to stand fully upright and balance on its hind limbs for extended periods, allowing it to reach vegetation up to two metres high that no other antelope can access.

It is, in effect, a gazelle that decided to become a giraffe. Partially. On its own terms.

Uniquely adapted to arid environments, the gerenuk rarely needs to drink water, extracting all the moisture it needs from the leaves and shoots it browses. In the harsh landscapes of northern Kenya, this is a significant advantage.

Found almost exclusively in the Horn of Africa and northern Kenya, the gerenuk is one of the five Samburu Specials - animals you will not find south of here. Seeing one at Elephant Bedroom is always a moment worth stopping for.
