Five hours.
Ten flap discs.
A lot of algae.
And one very tired bit of decking.
The river deck has spent a long time doing exactly what river decks do in Cambodia โ sitting beside the water, getting damp, growing things and slowly weathering away.
So today's job was getting the timber back as clean as we could, sanding away years of algae and surface deterioration before giving it some protection.
Ideally, we'd treat the bare wood with a proper fungicide and timber treatment first.
Unfortunately, being right beside a river makes that a rather less attractive option. We don't particularly fancy washing chemicals straight into the water. ๐
So we've made the slightly controversial decision to sacrifice the natural timber look and apply thinned coats of enamel paint instead.
Not because green paint was our lifelong dream. ๐
But because, at this point, protecting the timber and getting some longevity out of the deck has to come first.
We're still divided over the colour... but it does brighten the space and contrast the deck against the river! So we are actually loving it more each day.

And yes, this is another one of those jobs that looks simple until you actually start doing it.
