When people think about Phnom Penh, places like the Royal Palace and National Museum often come to mind first. But if you really want to understand the city, spend a few hours at one of the local markets.

Markets are where Phnom Penh comes alive. Locals shop for groceries, bargain for clothing, grab breakfast before work, and catch up with friends over a cup of iced coffee.

For travelers, they are also some of the best places to sample authentic Khmer street food and experience daily life beyond the tourist attractions. Here are five local markets worth exploring during your stay in Phnom Penh.

Bananas are used in many Cambodian light bites and snacks, but today we would like to introduce you to two of them first; 𝗝𝗲𝗸 𝗔𝗻𝗴 (Grilled Banana) and 𝗔𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗺 𝗔𝗻𝗴
(Grilled Banana Stuffed with Sticky Rice).

You'll often find both being sold side by side from the same street cart.

Jek Ang is made by skewering 4 to 5 bananas (depending on their size), brushing them with lightly salted water before grilling. Some vendors even mix chopped spring onions into the salted water, adding a subtle savory aroma. A skewer typically costs between 1,000 and 2,000 Riels (around $0.25–$0.50).

As this snack has been part of Cambodia's street food culture for generations, some vendors have given it a modern twist by topping the grilled bananas with freshly shredded coconut and serving them with a rich coconut milk dipping sauce. This version is slightly more expensive, usually costing 2,500 to 4,000 Riels (around $0.63–$1.00).

Ansom Ang, on the other hand, is made by wrapping a whole banana in sticky rice, covering it with a banana leaf, and grilling it until the outside is lightly charred while the inside stays soft and fragrant. It usually costs between 1,000 and 1,500 Riels (around $0.25–$0.38).

Both snacks are easy to find throughout Phnom Penh, especially from roadside carts. Best of all, you can enjoy either one for less than 4,000 Riels (about $1).

Have you tried either of these Cambodian street snacks? Which one would you choose?

One of the best ways to experience Phnom Penh is on foot.

While the city is often seen as a gateway to Angkor Wat or Cambodia’s beaches, spending a day wandering around the riverside reveals a different side of the capital. Historic landmarks, local life, colonial architecture, museums, temples, and parks are all surprisingly close together.

If you’re staying at Amanjaya Pancam Suites Hotel, many of Phnom Penh’s most visited attractions are just a short walk away. From royal landmarks and centuries-old temples to bustling local markets and modern museums, you can discover a surprising amount of the city without spending much time in traffic.
