Just a few days ago, our hotel manager traveled to visit her family near the Thai–Cambodian border. What started as a peaceful visit quickly turned into something else — with the sound of gunfire, explosions, and people fleeing nearby villages.

Fifteen years ago, I arrived in Southeast Asia with a one-way ticket, a backpack, and no idea what lay ahead. I came as a traveler… and stayed as a local.

From the beaches of Thailand to over a decade living in the Philippines, and now calling Cambodia home — this journey eventually led to the creation of Lotus Haven Villa, a place where travelers from around the world can feel at home in Siem Reap.

Many guests have asked about my story, how life is here, and what it’s really like to start over in a completely different part of the world.
