Coral bleaching is very bad this year!

"When water is too warm, corals will expel the algae living in their tissues causing the coral to turn completely white. This is called coral bleaching. When a coral bleaches, it is not dead. Coral can survive a bleaching event, but they are under more stress and are subject to mortality." National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

Top; Healthy coral colony when we went to cut off fishing net on 17th April
Bottom Lefte; The same colony all bleaching when we went back there on 20th May
Bottom Right; The ocean day, we went back again for reef clean up and noticed most of corals on this shallow (-5m) reef are bleaching.

Three clean up dives of total over 4 hrs. We managed to get our house reef nice and clean again. Soon the healthy coral will take over the damaged part and this reef will be amazing again.

Why this small coral reef gets affected by marine debris more than the others? It is the current pattern that normally bring lots of good nutrient for the reef but also all trashes in the bay will mostly stuck here so this tiny reef act like a bumper protecting other reef behind it...

What a dive buddy Chhin Buntha and thanks Mr. Bon for boat support this time we removed 4 loaded bags of fishing nets and lines.

As always we can't do this work without supporting from Khmer Dive Group Bubbles Up Dive Center for dive equipments and cylinders GTVC Speedboat Cambodia for having such a skillful diver staff Cambodian Marine Life ID and Spicy23 M' Pay Bay Booking and Info for base host and marine education support.

Reef Clean Up at M' Pai Bay house reef

DO WE NEED TO CLEAN UP THE REEF ?

Yes, we need to keep cleaning and preventing trashes to enter the sea. Fishing net and fishing line is the most founded stucking killing coral reef espectially the branching coral which is the most important nursery for young fishes. This synthetic polymer is so strong it could last for centuries and continue destroying reef during it life time. If we do not remove it there is very little chance for the reef to become healthy and yes less marine biodiversity that support lives on land.

CAN ANYONE JUST GO HELP CLEANING UP THE REEF ?

No, it need to be done by expert scuba diver who also well educated about coral reef. Otherwish you will either hurt yourselves or breaking killing more of live healthy coral.
