At Two Roots Garden Cambodia, we believe that farming begins beneath our feet.
Before we think about harvesting vegetables, planting fruit trees, or building a food forest, we first ask a simple question:
Is the soil alive?
Healthy soil is not an empty growing medium. It is a living ecosystem filled with bacteria, fungi, earthworms, insects, roots, organic matter, water, air, and countless interactions that we cannot always see.
A handful of healthy soil can contain an enormous community of microorganisms. These tiny organisms help decompose organic matter, cycle nutrients, build soil structure, support plant roots, and contribute to the natural fertility of the land.
This is why, at Two Roots Garden, we don't see soil as something to exploit. We see it as something to care for.
πΏ WHEN THE SOIL IS ALIVE, THE GARDEN CAN THRIVE
Plants do not grow in isolation.
A tree is connected to the soil.
The soil is connected to fungi.
Fungi interact with roots.
Roots feed microorganisms.
Microorganisms help cycle nutrients.
Leaves fall back to the ground.
Organic matter returns to the soil.
And the cycle continues.
This is nature's farming system.
When soil is repeatedly disturbed, left bare, compacted, eroded, or deprived of organic matter, its biological activity can decline. The result can be poorer soil structure, reduced water-holding capacity, nutrient losses and greater dependence on external inputs.
We don't want to fight the soil. We want to work with it.
That is one of the foundations of our approach to Syntropic Fostering and regenerative food-forest development.
πͺ± HOW CAN WE SEE IF OUR SOIL IS ALIVE?
You don't need an expensive laboratory to begin observing your soil.
You can start with your hands, your eyes, and a little curiosity.
A simple soil-life observation
1. Choose several areas of your garden.
Select at least three representative locations rather than relying on one small sample.
2. Carefully dig into the soil.
A sample around 20 Γ 20 Γ 20 cm can provide a useful field observation.
3. Place the soil on a tray or clean surface.
Break the soil apart gently with your hands.
4. Look carefully.
Search for:
πͺ± Earthworms
π Ants
πͺ² Beetles
π Larvae and grubs
π·οΈ Spiders
π Termites
π Fungal threads
π± Fine plant roots
π Decomposing organic matter
Other small soil organisms
5. Record what you find.
You can compare different areas of the garden over time.
The purpose is not simply to produce a number.
The purpose is to learn to see the soil as an ecosystem.

π¬ THE INVISIBLE FARMERS
Not all of the farmers in our garden can be seen.
Bacteria and fungi are working continuously around plant roots and within decomposing organic matter.
These microorganisms participate in nutrient cycling and decomposition. Some fungi form relationships with plant roots known as mycorrhizae, helping plants explore a larger volume of soil for water and nutrients while receiving carbon compounds from the plant.
Plants also release carbon-rich compounds through their roots. These root exudates help support microbial communities around the roots.
It is a remarkable exchange:
Plants feed soil life.
Soil life helps plants.
Organic matter feeds the system.
The system builds the soil.
This is one reason we don't want to simply feed plants with soluble nutrients and forget the soil.
We want to feed the ecosystem.
π FEED THE SOIL, NOT JUST THE PLANT
At Two Roots Garden, organic matter is not rubbish.
Leaves, branches, plant residues, mulch, compost and other suitable organic materials can become part of the soil-building cycle.
Instead of asking:
βHow can I remove everything from the garden?β
we ask:
βHow can I return more life to the garden?β
Leaves become mulch.
Branches become habitat and organic matter.
Plant residues become food for decomposers.
Compost becomes a source of organic matter and nutrients.
Living roots keep the soil connected to plants.
Over time, these practices can help build a more biologically active and resilient growing system.
π³ BRINGING TIRED SOIL BACK TO LIFE
Poor soil is not necessarily a permanent condition.
Soil can change.
At Two Roots Garden, we focus on practical actions that support the living system.
πΏ Keep the soil covered
Bare soil is vulnerable to intense tropical sun, heavy rain, erosion and moisture loss.
Living plants and organic mulch can protect the surface.
π Return organic matter
Compost, suitable manure, leaves and plant residues can return carbon and nutrients to the soil.
π± Keep living roots in the ground
Cover crops, groundcovers and diverse plantings help keep biological activity going between harvests.
πͺ Reduce unnecessary disturbance
Constant intensive tillage can disrupt soil structure, fungal networks and soil habitats.
We prefer to disturb the soil only when there is a good reason.
π§ Protect the water cycle
Healthy soil structure and organic matter can improve infiltration and water retention, reducing the impact of heavy rain and dry periods.
π Encourage biodiversity
A healthy garden is not just vegetables.
It includes trees, shrubs, herbs, groundcovers, insects, fungi, birds, decomposers and microorganisms.
Diversity creates relationships. Relationships create resilience.
π SOIL, CARBON AND CLIMATE
Healthy soil is also part of the carbon story.
Plants capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. Some of that carbon becomes plant material, while some is transferred below ground through roots and eventually enters soil organic matter.
But soil carbon is not automatically permanent.
It can be lost through erosion, decomposition, disturbance and other processes.
That is why regeneration is not simply about βputting carbon into the soil.β
It is about building a functioning ecosystem that continually produces organic matter, protects the soil and supports living roots.
At Two Roots Garden, carbon is not a slogan. It is part of the living cycle.
Sunlight becomes plant growth.
Plant growth becomes organic matter.
Organic matter feeds soil life.
Soil life helps build the ecosystem.
And the cycle begins again.

Our goal is not to copy nature perfectly.
Our goal is to learn from nature.
In our garden, we work with principles of syntropic agriculture, regenerative soil management, food-forest development and local Khmer gardening knowledge.
We combine different layers and stages of vegetation so that the garden becomes more productive and more ecologically complex over time.
Trees create structure.
Shrubs occupy another layer.
Herbs and vegetables use the spaces below.
Groundcovers protect the soil.
Roots explore different levels underground.
Pruning and returning organic material can help maintain the growth cycle.
Instead of treating every plant as an isolated crop, we look at the whole system.
The garden becomes an ecosystem, not just a field of crops.

A farmer can look across a field and see only vegetables.
But beneath those vegetables may be an entire world.
Earthworms moving through the soil.
Fungi connecting with roots.
Bacteria decomposing organic matter.
Insects breaking down residues.

Water moving through pores.
Carbon moving between plants, soil and atmosphere.
This is the hidden economy of the garden.
And it is one of the greatest resources a farmer has.
