THE LEBANESE HOUSE...

When we talk about the Lebanese house we enter a world of sunshine and light, of color both subtle and vivid, of simplicity of form and elegance of proportions.
The simplest Lebanese house consists of one large room called al iIliya, which as its name indicates is the uppermost part of the building. The illiya is built on top of a vaulted lower room called the kabou. The kaboo is used for storing animals, firewood and tools. The illyia contains the living quarters and enjoys the best views. The terrace in front of it (stayha) is where the family gathers in the evening to enjoy the cool night air and even sleep on hot summer nights. The roof is built up of a layer of crushed stone over a thick layer of earth. The layer is carried by a vaulted stone or timber structure. The roof requires regular maintenance for compacting the earth to stop the pe*******on of rain. This is achieved through dragging a stone roller (mahdalleh) over it to close any cracks that may appear. The roof tops were and are to this day an important part of the house. The long and hard winter months made September a busy month due to the necessity of stocking up the house with foodstuff (mouni).Small bunches of sticks and pine cones for use as fire wood were dried on the roof. Figs, raisins, apricots, pine kernels, tomatoes, green beans, burgul and kishk were dried for the mouni. Burgul is cracked wheat while kishk is burghul marinated in yogurt. In September, the roofscape of any village in Lebanon is like an oriental carpet rich with patches of color and texture.
The beauty of the traditional Lebanese house is in its simplicity and modesty. It blends into its surroundings. Always a source of pride for its owners, it never dominated the landscape nor was it ostentatious. By bringing nature into the heart of the house, it enriched the lives of people and inspired them. The Lebanese house fulfilled the ultimate aim of architecture.

Easter in Lebanon, as well as among other Christians in the Middle East, is celebrated by local Christian communities (Maronite Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Melkite Catholic, Armenian Orthodox, Syriac Catholic, Armenian Catholic, Syriac Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Chaldean, Assyrian, Coptic, Protestant).Lebanon is known for its attachment to family and traditions. Sunday Easter lunch becomes a gathering for not only close relatives but also the extended family. Easter lunch comes after a long period of fasting so, the usual dishes served include turkey, chicken, and lamb meat like the oriental chicken and rice dish, stuffed greens, and lamb chops.
The famous delicacies prepared especially for Easter are:
Maamoul
It's one of the most renowned Lebanese delicacies prepared especially for Easter. It consists of an assortment of shortbread made from semolina, sugar, butter, rose water, and orange blossom water. The shortbreads are filled with either dates, walnuts, or pistachios and sometimes covered with icing sugar. Traditionally, there is a shape for each flavor that helps differentiate them from one another. Usually, the dough is prepared on Good Friday, and the Maamoul is baked the next day.
Easter Eggs
In some countries, people celebrate Easter by doing an egg hunt on Easter Sunday. In Lebanon, the tradition is a little more different: egg matches. Members of the family gather after the Easter Sunday lunch. Each one chooses a colored boiled egg. They next proceed to an egg match. The winner is the one who beats all the rest. You can also dye the eggs the traditional way with skins of red and yellow onions.
Kaak El Eid
This is the generic name for homemade milk cakes that are produced in villages all over Lebanon, with preparations differing from one village to the other. It is a common treat during the Easter. Mahlab is often a main ingredient and some households make the cake softer than others.

Finally, on Easter Sunday people greet by saying :
Al Massih Qam Hakkan Kam
(Christ is Risen!Indeed, He is Risen)
