⛴️ The boats came in hours ago.

They go out around three in the morning,
in the dark, and come back somewhere between eight and ten depending on what they find. By midday the beach looks like this ; everything hauled up past the tide line, nets spread out, engines resting.

Each one is painted differently. That's not decoration. From a kilometre out at sea you need to know which boat is yours.

There's one still on the water, bottom left of the frame. Somebody's father, probably. He'll be in before the heat gets serious.

This is the coast near Ussangoda, ten minutes from us.

It has this instead.Floor to ceiling jungle. A bookshelf full of stories. A sofa that has no idea what a deadline is.

Somewhere between the second course and the last of the light, you stop checking the time.
A table on the sand, a fire that keeps the dark at a distance, and the Indian Ocean turning over quietly a few metres away. Everything on the plate was in our garden this morning.
This is how evenings should end.

Meet Aari (ආරි)
Every morning, before most guests are awake, he’s already here ; moving through the garden, basket in hand, picking what’s ready.
Tomatoes still warm from the sun. Brinjal pulled fresh from the stem. Chilies chosen one by one.
What ends up in your meal at Ravana Gardens was in the ground a few hours ago. That’s not a marketing line. That’s just how ආරි works. ආරි made sure of it.
This is what organic actually looks like. Not a label on a packet ;but a person who cares.
