The bonds within an Asian elephant herd are shaped by care, protection and instinct. Calves grow surrounded by their mothers and other females of the herd, learning the rhythms of life through the family around them.

As young males mature, they gradually leave their family herd and begin a more independent life, roaming across the landscape and eventually seeking opportunities to mate. It is a natural transition that has shaped elephant society for generations.
