Hidden among the trunks and tree hollows of Sinharaja lives the Sri Lankan Ornamental Tarantula (Poecilotheria fasciata), an endemic, tree-dwelling spider recognised by its intricate black-and-white markings.
Fast-moving and largely nocturnal, it spends much of its life concealed within the forest canopy, emerging to hunt insects and other small prey. Though rarely encountered, it plays an important role as a predator within the rainforest’s complex food web, reminding us that some of Sinharaja’s most remarkable inhabitants remain quietly out of sight.
