It was love at first sight.

Palm-fringed golden sands, surfers carving up sweet left-handers, cool cafes serving up incredibly fresh brunch worthy of any Melbourne cafe; this was a place so beautiful, so peaceful, and so perfect that we knew we'd definitely arrived in heaven.

To be named SUPERHOSTS this past year in Sri Lanka is remarkable for any small business to have achieved.

We would like to extend our biggest thanks to our amazing guests, your 5 star reviews and valuable feedback has always helped us improve our guests experience. We are always listening to you.

To our amazing team…Samee, Sagara and Nisa you have gone above and beyond. Behind the scenes has been a logistical nightmare in 2022. From no electricity, to no water, to no gas (for cooking & laundry), to lockdowns and curfews you still ensured our guests had a memorable holiday.

You had no fuel to get to and from work and public transport came to a complete holt. Yet you still figured out a way to show up to work everyday!!

In between cleaning houses and attending to our guests you ran out on the streets to protest for your countries freedom! Always returning straight back to finish the job at hand.

We will forever be in awe of how resilient you and all Sri Lankan’s truely are! Forever smiling, forever in our heart.

Thankyou to the incredible community of Hiriketiya who has always welcomed us with open arms. And to the small army of people who always jump in and help us out when needed. We are forever grateful of you!!

Our Story

Providing comfortable, beautiful and community-minded accommodation within walking distance of Hiriketiya Beach.

Sukha started in early 2018.

We were travelling Sri Lanka for the first time ever and 2 weeks into our adventure we stumbled across Hiriketiya Bay. We immediately realised paradise had been found. The natural tropical beauty, the awesome waves, the friendly local community and the sprouting café scene brought back fond memories of the life we loved years earlier in Indonesia.

While passing back through Hiriketiya for the second time Sukha’s future was determined. After an enjoyable surf and a bite to eat we were wandering through the village at dusk with fireflies lighting the way when we found a little gem. A weathered-down village house was sign posted for rent. After being welcomed in, we met and connected with the owners, then a long-term leasing deal was agreed upon and Sukha’s first village home was set to be renovated and turned into the loveable Sukha House. The family moved across town to a larger less expensive home which provided a room for each of the children, an actual functioning kitchen (as opposed to cooking on the ground with the mud-clay stand previously) for Mumma to cook in and a full bathroom for the whole family…they couldn’t be happier. We also suggested to Puppa Saroj that our future guests could hire him as their TukTuk driver…and to this day he is still happily driving many of the Sukha guests around town.

Living in extra comfort the family were able to watch as their original home received a beautiful face-lift with built-in furniture, beds, pool and outdoor entertaining area. All of which will be back in their possession at the end of the leasing term.

As an added bonus the extra income from the lease provides the equivalent of an added full time income for the family….even after the costs for their new home is deducted.

Having built homes in South-East Asia previously, we knew that the renovations required for each property would take a lot of commitment, patience and local expertise. We have been so fortunate to meet the small army of locals who have helped us to make this our reality.

Leading that charge was Samee, a local born and bred Hiriketiya boy who has become more than our friend…he is our right hand man…and he truly is our brother. We love you Malli (little brother).

This is the Sukha model that we feel comfortable operating under. Local families are taken care of and employed, they receive extra income, they have their properties upgraded and most importantly they still maintain ownership of the property and land, which we feel is very important for Sri Lanka as a nation.

A positive motivation leads to positive actions which equals positive karma all around.

This we hope will assist everybody in attaining a piece of Sukha (permanent joy, happiness and bliss).

Hiriketiya is one of those rare locations that has found the balance between feeling absorbed in nature while providing a sociable setting to remain connected with others. The ocean can be heard pushing up along the narrow stretch of sand and monkeys are commonplace, jumping between the dense forest, cafes and tropical palms that hug the coastline. This is the perfect place to disconnect from the bustling world without entirely eliminating contact with others.

Here you will discover the perfect setting for people from all walks of life; an environment ideal for families looking for a relaxing time by the water, a great surf scene for surfers in search of fun tropical waves or the perfect retreat for couples wanting that ideal getaway with a mix of beach, quality food and Sri Lankan culture.

In recent years, many digital nomads from all over the world have found themselves at the bay and fallen for its charm. In a short space of time a true sense of community has been created, anchored around a common drive to nurture an environment that encourages self-love and creativity. Establishments like Salt House, Salty Pelican, Jasper House and Dots offers daily Yoga classes in a variety of styles, both in the morning and afternoon, convenient for those who need to adjust routines around times best suited for surfing. Verse Collective is one of several cafes in the area ideal for those need to finish a little work while away or would simply prefer a quality coffee by their side as they tuck into a book. There is also a string of restaurants providing a diverse range of both Sri Lankan food and healthy highlights from the West. Our favourite places to fill up in between sessions of saltwater and sun include Bahia, Salthouse, Bombora Rooftop, Dunis Hoppers, Malu, Mond and the smoked fare at Smoke n Bitters.

Beyond the comfort of these places, a little pocket of paradise awaits. Despite the short stretch of beach, Hiriketiya is a bay that offers a generous amount of variety for surfers of all backgrounds and levels of experience. Breaking from the northern headland is a left-hand point, a perfect spot for intermediate-advanced surfers looking to break away from the crowded waves up the coast. The wave is mirrored by another on the southern end, a slightly less consistent right-hander, but well worth keeping an eye out for on the right tides and swell. What separates the two is a beachbreak, ideal for beginners wishing to practice their skills in user-friendly conditions where regular surf lessons are conducted for those ready to master the basics. All of these breaks are easily viewed from the sand, and it’s never difficult to spot a travelling companion surfing a wave or floating in the line-up from the comfort of your beach towel.

Nearby, Dickwella is a small town that offers general stores and all the conveniences required for your stay such as an ATM, Pharmacy etc. Easily accessed from Hiriketiya by a short 5-minute Tuktuk ride, or better still, you can walk there along Dickwella beach. Everything that Hiriketiya has to offer is a short stroll from each of our properties.

There is also plenty of opportunity outside of Hiriketiya to immerse yourself in the local Sri Lankan culture and some awesome natural treasures nearby; including the Wewurukannala (largest seated Buddha statue in Sri Lanka) Temple, Mulkirigala Rock Temple, the Hummanaya Blowhole (the only blowhole in Sri Lanka), Udawalawe National Park and Yala National Park.
