Since we began running our homestay, I’ve had the privilege of meeting many wonderful guests. But every now and then, some people leave a lasting mark on my heart. Tanja and Dirk are especially dear among them.

Almost exactly a year ago, they came into my life as guests. Today, I met them again—not as their host, but as their guest. In truth, as their friend.

This is the true beauty of what we do. It’s not just about offering a place to stay or earning an income—it’s about creating connections, sharing stories, and building friendships that stretch across borders and time.

The southern coast of Sri Lanka is filled with incredible beaches and small coastal towns.

Most of the areas in the south coast of Sri Lanka are being developed and with highly populated. However, there are some small fishing villages with beautiful beaches at the edge of rapidly developing towns.

Some traditional fishing boats (locally called Oru) are in the photo. Several types of traditional Oru (boats), such as Madel Oruwa, Pila Oruwa, Vallam Oruwa, have been used in Sri Lanka for thousands of years. Traditional Oru are made of dugout wood such as jak, breadfruit, wild mango and teak trees. However, most of the new boats are made of fiberglass now. The ruwal oruwa leaves in the late evening or night and returns to shore after night fishing to unload the catch in the early morning sunrise.
