Agwe Villa is a delightful and rare two storey antique house in a fishing village, five minutes’ walk to the local beach and a five minutes’ tuk tuk ride to Hikkaduwa (20 minutes to the beautiful UNESCO Heritage site of Galle Fort). The three-bedroom, fully-furnished house sits in half an acre of tropical gardens, complete with tropical fruit trees, palm trees and flowers. There is a private 8m sw

imming pool set amongst the lawn in front of the house – the perfect place to cool off at any time of day. Agwe Villa is situated equidistant between the ocean and Rathgama lake, elevated inland away from the road and rail. Agwe Villa’s owners have gently renovated the house without disturbing the original, authentic feel. All the doors and shutters are antique, the upstairs floor boards are beautiful old teak, and the downstairs flooring is rustic concrete. The furniture is either antique, dated from the same era as the house (approximately 1880) or replica furniture exquisitely hand crafted by the local carpenter. The house was purchased from the original Sri Lankan family who had owned it for four generations and it has played an historic role in the lives of many of the village residents. The house comes with full time security / caretaking staff and CCTV, as well as a weekly cleaner. A large wall at the front and back, and fencing to the sides, provides additional privacy so that you can enjoy the pool and garden without interruption. The local beach is like discovering paradise for many – only a few minutes’ walk and you will find nothing more than clean white sand and warm waves, with only a few other people around. The bustling fishing harbor is a wonderful sight, and the market is open nearly every day providing local residents with freshly caught seafood. The lake is peaceful and many people have started to discover stand up paddleboarding there, particularly popular at sunrise. In Hikkaduwa, some of the very best cafes, restaurants and beach bars are found along the entire Narigama / Hikkaduwa beach strip. Salty Swamis, Riff Hotel, The Sea Salt Society, Mambos and many others provide great food, drinks and atmosphere alongside some of the best surfing breaks the country has to offer.
