About the artist:
Born in 1935 in Kuruwita, Ratnapura, Sri Lanka, Kuruwita Abayawardana is an artist whose work is deeply rooted in memory, place and everyday life.
After studying at the Haywood Art Institute in Colombo, he dedicated 28 years to teaching at Kuruwita Central College while continuing to nurture his passion for art. In his eighties, he returned to painting with renewed energy, creating works primarily for his own satisfaction and personal expression. This late artistic resurgence has produced a remarkable body of work that reflects his memories, experiences and unique way of seeing the world. Inspired by the landscapes and people of his native village, his paintings feature scenes of rural life. Through these subjects, he captures the character, beauty and spirit of Sri Lanka’s countryside.
Beginning as a watercolour artist and portrait painter, Abayawardana gradually moved beyond realism into
a more expressive and imaginative style. His artistic vision was shaped by a diverse creative journey; as
a designer at the Wellawatte weaving Mills, a village artist immersed in traditional Sri Lankan art, a creator of temple murals and Vesak thoranas and an art teacher guiding younger generations. These experiences
encouraged a lifelong exploration of colour, pattern and composition, resulting in paintings rich in vibrant
hues and distinctive character. Rather than recording events as they appeared, he paints them as they are
remembered and felt.
Today at 91 years of age, surrounded by his family and community, the Kalabushana Award-winning artist continues to paint with enthusiasm, celebrating memory, landscape and the enduring beauty of Sri Lankan life.
