Our efforts to return to the cultivation of vanilla as a commercial crop has had its ups and downs. Particularly since recent information suggests that this, the world's second most expensive spice, was introduced into Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) in the mid-19th century by the first van der Poorten to settle in the country, Antoine Joseph, the effort assumes even more interest. We have had to battle monkeys, porcupines and wild pigs, all of whom do not attack the vines directly but whose grubbing and gnawing at other things adjacent to the vine does the vanilla irreparable damage. Readers of our monthly newsletter have been given regular updates on the subject and if you want a copy of the HPH Newsletter, send your name and email address to our website, https://www.halgollaplantationhome.com.

Selvaraja harvested several very long entada (Pus-vel) pods today. Sri Lankans old enough to remember should recall the large, flat, round seeds in these pods that are the largest beans in the world. Shall try to get a picture of one of these pods - about six feet long - on to this page if my Facebook skills permit

Just when we thought we'd have to go into water-supply-crisis mode again, we had showers of blessings last evening. We can but hope that the weather gods will continue to smile on us!

A few days ago we had a torrential downpour, accompanied by very loud peals of thunder and lots of lightning. Unfortunately, it appeared to the proverbial exception to the rule and we seem to be back to the terrible heat and humidity again. Need a major intervention from the weather gods, though the downpour did help replenish our drinking water spring.

We are in the throes of what seems like one of the most devastating droughts in memory and it is having a particularly adverse effect on our (blooming) vanilla vines which are beginning to wilt, together with the flower buds just emerging right now. We are going to be trying to alleviate their condition with an organic spray which will not only bring moisture to the vines but some nutrients as well. Wish us luck! Will try to get some pics of the spraying on our page later.

With my VERY limited Facebook skills, I hope I succeed in inserting the picture of Giant Bamboo flowers that NO ONE around here has ever seen before and which I am told is considered a harbinger of bad times in places like Assam. Are there still climate-change deniers when stuff like this happens?

Hope that this is not premature, but it seems like our electric fence to keep the vermin - primarily wild pigs and porcupines - out of the vanilla field is working. With the rains that came with the break in the weather, there was minor damage to the fence but no evidence of pest activity damaging the vines or the gliricidia uprights within the fenced area. We surmise that, in immediate reaction to contact with the live wire, the panicked reaction of whatever creature it was damaged the wire which had to be repaired (without too much effort) Readers of the HPH page will probably have inflicted more bulletins on this subject in the days ahead!
