Morning Moments with the Giants at Udawalawe National Park!

During a peaceful morning safari around 9.15, after visiting the serene Mau Ara water reservoir, we were heading back to the park's exit when we stumbled upon a charming sight, a small herd of five female elephants.

Here, you can see two sisters in action, skillfully gathering their breakfast. Notice how they gently uproot grass, shake off the dust, and savour each bite. Initially, they were over 30 meters away from us. Respecting their space, we paused our jeep to observe quietly. To our delight, they eventually approached us before retreating gracefully into the forest.

It’s moments like these that remind us why Udawalawe is a sanctuary for these magnificent creatures. 💚

Meet the Golden-Eyed Watcher of Wilpattu!

On a recent morning safari in Borupanwila, we were hot on the trail of fresh leopard prints when we encountered something just as captivating – the intense, golden gaze of a Brown Fish Owl! [Ketupa zeylonesis zeylonensis] This striking bird is Sri Lanka’s very own subspecies, the smallest and darkest of its kind in the world.

Perched on a trunk and blending into the wild landscape, this owl's rufous-brown feathers, streaked with black, were a perfect match for Wilpattu’s raw beauty. Although usually nocturnal, they sometimes grace us with a daytime appearance, especially near the park’s aquatic habitats. So, keep those binoculars ready, Wilpattu has a few surprises up its sleeve!

Meet the Star Tortoise: A Real-Life Nature Super Star!

And believe it or not, they can weigh up to a solid 3 kg and reach 25 cm in length! It's like carrying a mini universe on their back!

Meet "Some" (සෝමේ), the Majestic Warrior of Wilpattu.

Spotted in his prime at Nelum Vila during a recent full-day safari, "Some" is one of Wilpattu National Park’s fiercest and most powerful male leopards. Known for his strength and tenacity, Some’s face carries the scars of hard-fought battles, each one a testament to his dedication to defending his territory.

Captured by our talented naturalist Tharaka Dhananjaya, this shot shows just why he’s known as a true king of the jungle. Witnessing him in his element was nothing short of incredible.

A Morning Encounter with a Painted Stork.

On this serene morning at around 7:30 am, the vibrant hues of the painted stork stood out against the calm waters of Udawalawe National Park. Captured by our guest, Mr. Geared, this magnificent bird’s striking pink and white plumage brought life to the tranquil scene.

Known for their elegance and precision, painted storks are often seen wading through shallow waters, searching for fish and frogs nature’s very own skilled hunters.

A special visitor made an appearance at Big Game Camp Wilpattu’s welcome area today! This shy Barking Deer seemed eager to join our team in greeting guests. With its soft brown coat and distinctive barking call, it's one of the most elusive creatures in the jungle an honour to spot!

Known for their cautious nature, these gentle animals typically prefer staying hidden in the underbrush, so having one stroll near our camp was a magical moment. We wonder if it’s applying for a guest relations role? 😉
