What is this "Little Sinharaja"?
It is the Kottawa Forest Reserve, a rainforest rich in biodiversity. You can find it in the Southern Province, near the Galle District, about 13 kilometers along the Galle Udugama road. The Kottawa Reserve is a remarkable tropical wet evergreen forest. Located in the Yakkalamulla Divisional Secretariat Division, this forest covers an area of approximately 435 hectares. This forest, recognized as one of the conservation forests in Sri Lanka, holds a very high status in terms of its educational, research, and biological importance. Several streams such as Thundola, Dunukeyiya Dola, Haldola, and Udumulla Dola flow through this reserve, and it also functions as a catchment area for the Polathu Modara River.
මොකද්ද මේ පුංචි සිංහරාජය කියන්නේ?
ඒ තමයි ජෛව විවිධත්වයෙන් අනූන කොට්ටව වනාන්තරය. මේක අපිට හම්බ වෙන්නේ දකුණු පළාතේ ගාල්ල දිස්ත්රික්කයට ආසන්නව ගාල්ල උඩුගම මාර්ගයේ කි.මී. 13ක් විතර ගමන් කලාම. කොට්ටව අධි රක්ෂිතය කියන්නේ දැකුම්කලු තෙත් කලාපීය සදාහරිත වැසි වනාන්තරයක්. යක්කලමුල්ල ප්රාදේශීය ලේකම් වසමේ තුල පිහිටලා තියෙන මේ වනාන්තරය හෙක්ටෙයාර 435ක පමණ ප්රමාණයකින් යුක්ත වෙනවා. ශ්රී ලංකාව තුල සංරක්ෂණ වනාන්තර ලෙස දැනට හඳුනාගෙන ඇති වනාන්තර වලින් එකක් වන මෙය අධ්යාපනික, පර්යේෂණ හා ජෛව විද්යත්මක වැදගත්කම අතින් ඉතා ඉහල ස්ථානයක් ලෙස හඳුනා ගෙන තිබෙනවා. මෙම රක්ෂිතය හරහා තුන්දොළ, දුනුකෙයියා දොළ, හල්දොල, උඩුමුල්ල දොළ ගලා බසින අතර පොල් අතු මෝදර ගඟේ ජලපෝෂක ප්රදේශය ලෙසද මෙය ක්රියා කරනවා.
