There is a quieter side to Yala National Park, and Block 05 reveals it slowly, far from the usual tracks where the forest breathes a little deeper and silence takes over. The journey begins along Idigolla Wewa and weheragala Reservoir, their still waters reflecting sky and forest life.

Here, a fleeting glimpse of the Sri Lankan leopard feels unhurried and rare, an encounter shared in absolute stillness. Above, the white-bellied sea eagle glides with precision, while grey langurs move through the canopy with ease and quiet mischief.

In sudden bursts of colour, the Indian peafowl appears, its beauty tied to the cultural heart of Katharagama. Across the grasslands, spotted deer graze alertly, forming the foundation of this fragile ecosystem.

Even the smallest lives carry weight in this ecosystem. The lesser banded hornet builds intricate paper-like nests from chewed wood fibres and saliva, a reminder of nature’s quiet craftsmanship.

If fortune allows, the elusive sloth bear may emerge from the undergrowth, while wetlands come alive with the elegant painted stork. A mother elephant and calf move in close harmony, embodying the emotional core of the wild.
High above, the changeable hawk-eagle watches in silence, ever present, ever alert.

Block 05 is not about chasing sightings, but allowing them to unfold. It is a place where patience is rewarded, and every moment lingers long after you leave. An unhurried safari that stays with you long after the forest fades.

In the silent language of the Sri Lankan wild, a single touch can tell a lifetime of stories.

What may appear as a gentle greeting is, in truth, a high-stakes ‘biological assessment.’ Here, the matriarch, the oldest and most experienced female of the herd, the keeper of knowledge, memory, and social order; uses her trunk to scent a newcomer’s mouth and temporal glands. This is no idle curiosity; it is a sophisticated method of gathering information.

By sampling these areas, she detects chemical signals that reveal the stranger’s health, reproductive status, and even signs of stress or calm. Every sniff allows her to ‘read’ the newcomer’s profile, helping her judge whether they pose a risk to the herd or could be safely accepted. Should she detect illness or anxiety, her instinct is to prioritise her calves, keeping them protected and turning the stranger away.

It is a silent, instinctive calculation of trust, where a single scent can determine whether an elephant finds a place in the herd or remains an outsider, a subtle, elegant choreography of survival and social wisdom.

Stepping through these doors feels like a quiet conversation with the past. From its origins as a 17th-century Dutch mansion to its life as a boutique sanctuary, the Galle Fort Hotel is a place where every hallway whispers a story.

But the narrative doesn't end at our threshold. Beyond the gates lies the Galle Fort, a living UNESCO World Heritage monument where time seems to slow down. Built by the Portuguese and fortified by the Dutch, the Fort is a rare tapestry of European architecture woven into South Asian soul.

Wander the ramparts at dusk as the Indian Ocean crashes against ancient coral masonry, or lose yourself in the grid-lined streets where quirky boutiques and artisanal gelato shops sit in the shadow of the iconic Lighthouse. To stay here is to live within the heart of history; to explore the sun-drenched cobblestones by day, and retreat into the cool, tranquil embrace of our courtyards by night.

The evolution of a culture is often most vividly expressed through the way its people dress.

Attire reflects local customs, yet it is also shaped by influences from distant lands, absorbed through centuries of trade and cultural exchange. Clothing has long served as a marker of social status, a response to daily life and work, and a reflection of the aesthetic sensibilities of its time.

Sri Lanka, a historic hub of maritime trade, welcomed merchants and travellers from across the world, each leaving a subtle imprint on local dress. The result is a rich tapestry of styles where practicality meets elegance and tradition blends with foreign influence.

This gallery at offers a glimpse into this sartorial heritage. Here you will encounter the vibrant costumes of traditional dancers, the refined attire of Kandyan aristocrats, and the expressive garments of women who celebrated beauty and identity in graceful ways. Each image tells a story; not only of fashion, but of the lives and aspirations of those who once wore them.

Pause for a moment and imagine their world. In doing so, you connect with the rhythm of Sri Lanka’s past and the enduring creativity that continues to shape the way people dress today.

On World Wildlife Day 2026, we celebrate more than medicinal and aromatic plants, we celebrate a living legacy.

While the world may see them as a rediscovery, here in Sri Lanka they have always been part of who we are, rooted in our forests, carried through our kitchens, and woven into our culture.

Today, we honour not just these healing plants, but a way of life that understands health, heritage, and livelihoods are deeply connected. Because when we protect our trees, we protect ourselves.

The Golden Jackal is the only wild canid species found on the island of Sri Lanka. Its diet is highly varied, including small mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, and fruit. In local folklore, it is often portrayed as a clever trickster.

Ask our resident naturalist at The Warden's House for more fascinating stories about this remarkable species.
