Some moments stay.

In early January, Jason and Oonagh spent a few days with us — filled with light, conversations, stillness, and unexpected magic.

Jason sketched Harish.
Not as a subject, as a person.
Not performed, just seen.

For Harish, this was a dream — a moment he’ll carry for life.
For us, it was another reminder that this place is shaped by people, not walls.

Art found its way here.
So do new friendships and memories to be behold.

Today, The Cliff Lodge turns eight.
Not 8 years of perfection,
but 8 years of showing up.

What began as the dream of a couple has grown into something much bigger

a place carried by many hands, hearts, and everyday acts of care.

This place exists because of the people who hold it:
the ones who prepare breakfast in the early morning hours,
keep spaces open and clean,
light the lanterns and keep the fire,
pick the flowers and welcome guests with seamless hospitality.

Some have been here from the very beginning, others joined along the way.

All of them shaped what this place feels like and connect it with you.

The Cliff Lodge is no longer just an idea:
it is run by the Cliff Lodge Crew,
a mountain family that welcomes guests as they are and keeps this place alive in a quiet, honest and open hearted way.

As we step into our ninth year, we’re simply bringing our focus back to where it always belonged

to the unseen work that makes this place what it is.

Eight years.
Countless hands.
One shared dream.
No reinvention.

Happy 8th anniversary, The Cliff Lodge

Even after 7 years there are still moments happening for the very first time up here…
…recently one of our guest glampers wrote a poem about The Cliff Lodge - capturing perfectly our journey and the story behind this unique place

Anke and Naveen, they followed a dream
Living the life, or so it would seem
They met in London back in the day
Working in the city, the cosmopolitan way

They married 12 years ago with two friends and dreamt of the countryside where lifestyle lends
A different pace
And out of the race
Was it to be camping
Or should it be glamping
The future was certain
To close the London curtain

They came back to Sri Lanka in 2015
To look for their future yet to be seen
In 2017 they returned for some time
Looking for a place to draw the London line
Then this time there was a glimmer
Uncle suggested a place to consider

In that December
It’s one to remember
They both stood at the peak
Knowing the future was bleak
But wait…. Wasantha, he made the call
We can do it together and start off small

And so the teamwork began
Full of energy and because they can
They rebuilt the roofs and they cleared the paths
It was hard work but they had some laughs
From indoor kitchens and outdoor showers
This place gave richness in the views for hours

In 2018 they opened their dream
Ready for guests to come meet the team
The years go by and the place just grows
With kindness and laughter where the wild flowers
re-sow

The trek with Tharuka in a 4x4
Not an experience for many before
Then the final trek up the mountain with
Harris, Kutti and Niroshan
You push through the walk because you know you can

Those final few metres up to the dream
The depth of the forest to the Cliff lodge scene
The welcome and smiles from
Anke, Naveen and the team
Truly shows they have followed their dream

We thank you all for sharing your home
Your way of life and relaxing tone
The views, the sounds, the food and lots more
This is exactly what we came here for.

Mother Nature is Back with her own Natural Festive Season…

Throughout the years Our Xmas Tree on the opposite mountain always created the most beautiful moments and this is why today we wanted to share a small compilation of it with You all.

There is one picture from each year we had the honor to spend our time up here, starting from December 2017 all the way through this year.

We all wishing you the best of time in this last month of the year filled with joy and light. May your life be showered in bliss and enfolded in unconditional love.

UNPLUGGED…

It’s been a while! During the last two months we took some time off social media and followed our journey Back to the Roots.

DISCONNECT TO RECONNECT…

We have been spending Our Summer with Family and Friends without distractions…
…sometimes far away and of course up here.

A few Highlights were:
A Trip to Wedihiti Kanda with the whole Cliff Lodge Crew, Yoga with a Butterfly, Meeting with Anke’s Namesake (there really are TWO Anke Dias Weerasinha’s in this world :-)) from London and long lost family connections of Naveen, celebrating birthday and wedding anniversaries with family, friends and some of our guests and Anke spend a few weeks in Germany with her family. (More Stories and Posts of all of this is coming your way soon!)

All in All it has been a great time of catching up and connecting with our families and ourselves…
…never giving up and quintessentially appreciating Our Happy Place up here even more than before.

From... a cosmopolitan London city lifestyle

To... living on a rural off-grid Cliff Top in the Mountains of Sri Lanka

Be honest... Who on earth would do this? Crazy, right?

But... we had to give up everything

A comfortable home with all luxury Gadgets you can imagine

Well-paid jobs and promising careers

Travelling the world

But Wait... all of this is true but even so we gained a lot more than we gave up

A home within pure nature and wildlife healing our busy minds and bringing us even closer together

Giving chances to our local staff members and surrounding communities

Creating opportunities to support people in need and the environment

Down to Earth & Back to Nature

So... you still would say it is crazy, right? Well it is, kind of... and it’s definitely not everyones cuppa tea

For us... It’s the most rewarding decision we have ever made.

So what happened in the last 1,5 years since we opened The Cliff Lodge?

The time just flew by like the clouds following us around. Back in 2017 we were travelling around Sri Lanka for a few months, created a business plan for an extensive glamping project at the cliff and failed to find like minded people to invest. Well, that was exactly the struggle we knew back from London and it wasn’t much of a shock to us. In December we decided to camp at the cliff for a few days to see it, to hear it, to touch it, to taste it and to feel it…

The tea pluckers and their families left the line houses and Mother Nature once again embedded the ruins in a picturesque scenery.

And… we loved it even more than we already did. On the last day we met with Wasantha to tell him that we have to go back to London and work for the money we need to start. In the end he said: lets just start now, we have everything here we need and I will be with you - We can do it together and start small.

Honestly this was something we never heard before. He took a high risk in going with us and supported us all the way. (Read his story on @haputalemountaintours)

One of our guests once said that it feels like leaving her family as she was about to go back to Colombo and yes, we are a small family up here running the most remote lodge in the mountains of Haputale. Otherwise it would not be possible to do so…

Step by step… we started to blend in with the life up here (in the end of the day we were proper city dwellers before) and the three of us with the help of the communities around us started creating The Cliff Lodge…

Back then… it was just us but already in late January we were ready to Welcome our First Guests to experience this Absolute Escape and explore the Wonders of Mother Nature.

A 2 hr Off Road Jeep Ride and a 1.8km Hike through the Mountain Forest is the only Effort you have to make to Experience this Unique and Off the Grid Ambience for an Extraordinary Breakfast in the Clouds or Dinner under the Stars.

We would love to shout out a Big Thank You to all the People how helped us Along the Way and are now part of this amazing Story embedded in beautiful Views of cloudy Forests and Mountains right in the Centre of Sri Lanka!
