One thing about us- we love to share a meal!

Introducing home cooked authentic Sri Lankan food to our guests is such a pleasure, and when we get the opportunity -and guests who are eager to try- we enjoy whipping up a few curries or a barbecue with local produce and hanging out by the pool. Sharing stories, travel tips and all that inside knowledge we have on the island (yes we are the kind of hosts who don’t mind checking itineraries, and pointing you in the right direction, as the main thing is you having the best experience on your travels!) - thats part of what encouraged us to get into hospitality all those years ago ☺️ thanks to our Kittul and Bamboo guests for being great company!

Take a tour of Banana Leaf Apartments ~ our 4 bright and spacious apartments in the beautiful vibrant area of Narigama, Hikkaduwa.

Situated in a leafy green village in the South west of Sri Lanka, we’re just a short walk or Tuk tuk ride to the beach. We’re surrounded by nature, looking over cinnamon fields on a private road and that’s what we love- the blend of beach and jungle 💛

Spend the days exploring our beach, surfing -in high season- snorkeling, kayaking or visiting historic Galle Fort. Eat at fantastic restaurants, watch the sun set over the sea and maybe take in some live music or go to a beach party..then retreat back to our peaceful apartments and switch off to the sounds of nature.

Our plunge pool area is a truly tropical haven to relax in. Monkeys often visit the trees surrounding us and the bird life you can see - even if just sat there for a short time - is really special. In the evening the sun sets over the cinnamon field and palms opposite.

Kurundu is one of the upstairs balcony apartments, which gets a fantastic view of the sunset from its large daybeds.

Popular with guests who work remotely as they can sit at the desk in air conditioning, or use the breakfast bar and be surrounded by the sounds of nature. There’s also space to roll out a yoga mat and start your day peacefully stretching out.

Kurundu at a glance:
🌿 Large balcony daybeds and bamboo hanging chair to lounge on
🌿 private kitchen with fridge/freezer, sink, cooker and more!
🌿 Air conditioned bedroom with high ceilings and view of the cinnamon field
🌿 Private en suite bathroom (semi open-air)
🌿Super king sized bed

Jackfruit apartment is at garden level and stays the coolest in the day due to being slightly set back from Bamboo apartment (both can be booked together for up to 4 people)

Guests love that it feels slightly hidden even though it’s part of the same building 🤍

Jackfruit at a glance

🌿 Low bamboo chairs on terrace, alongside bar chairs in front of kitchen hatch
🌿 private kitchen with fridge/freezer, sink, cooker and more!
🌿 Air conditioned bedroom with view of our back garden
🌿 Private en suite bathroom with solar hot water

Sri Lankan nature and its diversity is breathtaking!

From the variety of marine life (brightly coloured tropical fish, rare turtles, whales and coral..) to the stunning birds, monkeys, sloth bears, boar, leopards and of course the majestic elephants you’re sometimes lucky enough to see in the wild.

We have rolling mountain ranges, perfect green abundant paddies and trees and plants growing the tastiest fruit, spices and vegetables wherever you go (in our garden alone we have jackfruit, bananas, coffee, curry leaf and more)

Appreciating these luxuries only adds to the magic of the memories you can make in Sri Lanka.

Nature needs protecting so tread lightly, encourage young visitors to explore and take in what they see, & most of all appreciate how very privileged we are to experience it all 💚

Banana Leaf is a feeling, and here is some of what that looks like

~ Coffee sat at your breakfast bar, on your terrace or balcony (yes every apartment has its own private kitchen)

~ Mist rising over the paddies: we are lucky to be situated close to lush paddy fields and the mist rising at sunrise can be breathtaking

~ Elvis in a cuddle trance: he’s a character, and not many people get to hold him, but Amila somehow manages to get him to lie like this and it’s too cute!

~ Reflections in the pool: our plunge pool is fringed by tropical plants

~ Sunshine through the rain: the light, smell and sound of a sunshine burst of rainfall is so beautiful

~ Leaves casting shadows: watch them appear throughout the day

~ Our favorite flowers blooming: have you smelled these?! Heavenly, scenting our entrance now and then

~ Bats in flight at sunset: slightly surreal, always mesmerizing

~ Shaded spots in the midday heat: our poolside parasols above the sunbeds

~ Buffaloes and their friends: Does the buffalo always have the same bird with it? We always wonder 💭

There are so many options for animal lovers outside of Yala (and Pinnewala for that matter- which we also encourage people to skip!) although if you do decide to visit there, some more experienced and ethical guides are available too ☺️

Private kitchens on each apartment 🙌🏽

For a long term stay it’s what can make all the difference- the chance to explore local markets and pick up tasty tropical fruit, or bring some freshly baked bread back from the bakeries for your breakfast. The kitchens at Banana Leaf were built with this in mind.
