AYURVEDA
Ayurveda is a 5000 years old system of natural healing that has its origins in the vedic culture if india. Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine from india that uses a constitutional model. Its aim is to provide guidance regarding food and lifestyle.
Ayurveda is derived from two Sanskrit words “Ayu + Veda”.
Ayu means Life
Veda means The knowledge.
Then the meaning of Ayurveda is the ‘Science of life’ which is more than a mere system of treating an illness.
The origins of Ayurveda has been traced back to around 5000 BC when they originated as an oral tradition. Some of the concepts of Ayurveda have been discovered since the time of Indus Valley civilization. The first recorded forms of Ayurveda as medical text evolved from the Vedas.
There are various legendary accounts of the origin of Ayurveda; such as that it was received by Danvantari from Brahma. Tradition also holds that the writings of Ayurveda were influenced by a lost text by the Sage Agnivesa.
The origins of Ayurveda are also found in Atharveda, which contains 114 hymns and incantations described as magical cures for dieases.
Ayurvedic Body Types
There are three types of bodies are described in Ayurveda as Kapha, Pitta and Vata.
• Kapha governs the structure of the body. It is the principle that holds the cells together and forms the muscle, fat, bone and sinew. The primary function of Kapha is protection.
• The pitta dosha controls digestion, metabolism and energy production. The primary function of pitta is transformation. Those with a predominance of the pitta principle have a fiery nature that manifests in both body and mind.
• Vata governs movement in the body, the activities of the nervous system and the process of elimination.
