Apart from its ecological and archeological significance, Wilpattu National Park is of substantial value because it is an icon of war and peace.
Many who have served in the park have sacrificed their lives caused in terrorist attacks. Amongst these people stands an eminent character, Mr. P.M.B. Somapala who was attacked and held at gun point by LTTE cardres in 1985 May 14th.
In addition to the overwhelming and remarkable presence of wildlife, Mr. Somapala's stories never fail to add a hint of excitement to visitors who visit Wilpattu.
Indeed there are very humble people lives those are traditional farmers. Many of dry zone fresh fruits and Chaina cultivated fresh organic vegetables use to prepare for your meals. Wilpattu National Park, as the name implies, is truly a land of lakes. Wilpattu translates as ' Lake District ' and owes its name to the unique saucer-shaped 'Villu' wetlands found randomly scattered throughout the park. The Wilpattu landscape is composed mainly of dry deciduous forests with thorny scrub jungle interpersed with extensive grassland. Sand and grassland rimmed water holes known as villus that are a unique feature of the park.

The Villus-
The most unique and attractive feature of Wilpattu is the villu pool ringed by grassland. Water collects in natural circular depressions in the ground and these depressions with a very low gradient have no outlet or inlet.

Leopard ( Panthera pardus ) - Being the largest cat in Sri Lanka National Parks, leopards freely roam in the jungle and open areas of Wilpattu National Park in the daytime.
