Indian Tourists Outspend Average Visitors – Reveals SLTDA Chairman Buddika Hewawasam

Forget the old myths Indian tourists are now top spenders in Sri Lanka! According to SLTDA Chairman Buddika Hewawasam, while the average visitor spends $148 daily, Indian tourists now average $154.

With promotions expanding into Gujarat and a new focus on luxury weddings and high-end tourism, the Indian market is booming. As of July 8, 2026, Indian travelers account for 25% of our 1.19 million total arrivals this year.

"Indian tourists are not low-spending visitors; they spend more per day than some European tourists," stated Chairman Hewawasam during a recent press briefing.

Sri Lanka Railway has decided to reduce the Colombo-Kankesanthurai intercity express train service from daily operations to four days a week due to a shortage of power sets.

Under the revised schedule, effective July 10, the train departing Mount Lavinia at 5.15 a.m. and Colombo Fort at 5.45 a.m. for Kankesanthurai, along with the return service leaving Kankesanthurai at 1.50 p.m. for Mount Lavinia, will operate only on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays.
