Situated just outside the Cultural and Religious Capital of Kandy, The Hermitage is a typical Kandyan House, loaded with authentic antiques and Kandyan art. Spend your days simply relaxing next to the pool, reading an excellent book from our in-house library, all while experiencing the sights and songs of the nearly 40 species of birds, including the very rare Grey Parrot. The more adventurous guests can venture out for a walk in the private nature walk-way and spot small animals such as monkeys, deer and wild boar.

Tonight marks the official beginning of the Kandy Esala Perahera 2026.

Here is a glimpse of the First Kumbal Perahera, the opening chapter of one of Sri Lanka's most sacred and enduring traditions, takes to the ancient streets of the hill capital.

Marking the beginning of 5 sacred nights honouring the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, the Kumbal Perahera offers a more intimate expression of the festival, placing devotion and sacred ritual at its heart before the processions gradually build towards the grandeur of the final Randoli Perahera.

Rooted in centuries of faith and tradition, the opening procession has long been associated with blessings, protection & prosperity. As Kandy awakens to the rhythm of drums, dancers and sacred pageantry, the festival will build in grandeur over the nights ahead. The Kumbal Peraheras continue until 22 August, before the magnificent Randoli Peraheras commence on 23 August, culminating in the Grand Randoli Perahera on 27 August.
