The Kandy Esala Perahera is not a single procession, but a coming together of distinct ceremonial traditions. The Devales of Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Pattini each contribute their own ritual heritage to the wider Perahera. From the resonant Naadhaswaram associated with the Kataragama Devale procession to traditions honouring Goddess Pattini, each adds another voice to Kandy’s extraordinary ceremonial landscape.

The rhythms heard through the Perahera carry histories far older than the procession itself. The iconic Ves tradition traces its roots to the Kohomba Kankariya, while instruments such as the Geta Bera, Thammattama and Dawul form part of a musical knowledge preserved through generations of dancers, drummers and craftspeople. Every movement and beat carries a tradition learned, practised and handed forward.

Each elephant costume begins with careful measurements before skilled artisans create elaborate patterns inspired by traditional and religious motifs, with embroidery historically worked in gold and silver thread. It is another example of how the Perahera brings together not only performance and ritual, but generations of specialised artistry.

The story at the heart of the Perahera is also intertwined with the story of Sri Lankan kingship. For centuries, guardianship of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha was associated with the sovereign right to rule. Today, enshrined within Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, the Sacred Tooth Relic remains an enduring focus of Buddhist devotion and the spiritual centre around which the Perahera unfolds.
