An ancient tradition will come alive once again in the streets of Kandy...

The Kandy Esala Perahera evolved from two ancient traditions—the Esala rituals held for blessings and rain, and the Dalada procession honouring the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. Over the centuries, particularly during the Kandyan Kingdom, these traditions grew into the magnificent cultural pageant known today, featuring traditional dancers, drummers, torchbearers and ceremonial elephants.

These historic images offer a glimpse into how this sacred celebration has been preserved and passed down through generations.

Make Mahaweli Reach Hotel your base for the Kandy Esala Perahera. After experiencing the colour, sound and energy of the procession, return to peaceful riverside surroundings, warm Kandyan hospitality and relaxing views of the Mahaweli River.

The first major ritual of the Kandy Esala Perahera is known as Kapa Kapeema, the ceremonial Kap is cut at historic Aluthnuwara in accordance with ancient customs. The ritual is conducted under the leadership of the Sri Maha Vishnu Devalaya of Kandy and has continued for more than three centuries.

This sacred act marks the beginning of the wider Esala Perahera season, a moment of devotion that sets an extraordinary cultural tradition in motion.

Long before the dancers, drummers and ceremonial processions appear, the story of the Perahera begins here.

On 8 June 1955, four courageous Rover Scouts from Kingswood College, Kandy, set out on an extraordinary overland expedition from Ceylon to London, travelling on just two motorcycles.

Carrying their camping equipment, tools and essential supplies, the young Kingswoodians journeyed across Asia, the Middle East and Europe, facing difficult roads, unfamiliar territories and the challenging border crossings of the 1950s.

Their mission was to reach England in time to represent Ceylon at the London International Patrol Camp, and they succeeded.

This remarkable expedition remains one of the most daring achievements in Sri Lankan scouting history. It stands as a powerful testament to the courage, resourcefulness, endurance and international brotherhood embodied by the Rover Scout movement.

More than seven decades later, their journey continues to inspire generations of Kingswoodians and Scouts across Sri Lanka.

Does anyone know the names of these four remarkable Rover Scouts or have more information about their historic journey? Please share your memories and stories in the comments.
