From garden to kitchen to table, in the space of a single morning.

At Aarunya, the cooking experience begins in the spice gardens, walking beside the chef through cinnamon, curry leaf, pepper, and herbs still warm from the mountain sun. Ingredients are chosen by scent, touch, and instinct.

Inside a kitchen inspired by the traditional Sri Lankan village mudhouse, traditions unfold slowly. The rhythm of mortar and pestle. Spices tempered over flame. Recipes shaped not by measurement, but by memory and balance.

Then, you sit down to what you have created, overlooking the Knuckles Mountain Range as mist moves through the valley below.

Not simply a cooking class, but an immersion into the flavours, rituals, and quiet generosity of a Sri Lankan kitchen.

The best souvenir is still a recipe carried home.

Handcrafted timber-lined ceilings.

Warm light resting gently on stone columns.

Tea poured into fine porcelain, as the jungle deepens into blue beyond open walls.

The Central Bungalow at Aarunya pays homage to the British tea planter’s home that once stood on this hillside, reimagined by architect Nath Rankothge into something rooted entirely in time and place.

An open pavilion.

A way of living within nature.

Inspired by the traditional village ambalama, Sri Lanka’s resting pavilions, and their quiet evolution into the palaces and temples of Kandy.

Soaring timber rafters.

Rattan-woven textures.

A billiards table standing where the drawing room once was.

At every edge, the jungle and mountain views press inward, not as decoration, but as invitation.

High tea arrives on a tiered stand, served in a space where architecture and nature share the role of host.

Columns frame the canopy.

Mountain air moves through as though it has always belonged.

This is the Aarambha experience, where arrivals become stays, and your transformative journey into awakening begins.

Where the first moment quietly shapes all that follows.

Nightfall at Aarunya reveals the Knuckles Mountain Range in another register.

Guided walks follow the edge of the estate and slip quietly toward the forest, where your eyes adjust until starlight feels enough.

Sound sharpens.
The air cools.
What seemed still by day begins to move with quiet intention.

Later, at the central bungalow perched at the highest point of the estate, take a glass of Ceylon arrack as the mountain exhales around you.

A telescope waits on the terrace, trained on the night sky. At this elevation, far from any city light, the sky gives back every star. Constellations resolve through the lens. Planets show their detail. The Milky Way traces itself overhead.

Then retreat to your villa for a nightcap of chamomile tea, the quiet settling deeper with every cup.

And with it, the sense that you have witnessed the estate’s second life, the one that begins when most retreat indoors.

This is nature experienced fully.

Not simply visited, but observed.
Not contained, but shared.
By day, and by night.

The Knuckles Mountain Range in silhouette.
A table set for two, where the pool meets the vast rarified expanse beyond.

A private dinner unfolds at the edge of the infinity pool.
Estate-grown dishes, served slowly, course by course.

Firelight.
A sky untouched by city light.

Nothing to interrupt the moment.
Just the food, the flame, and the particular intimacy of a meal with the quiet presence of the mountains.

Discover the serene beauty of Aarunya Nature Resort, where contemporary minimalism meets culture, nature and legacy - inspired by co-founder and architect Nath Rankothge and a deeply rooted family vision.

Our Central Bungalow and Premium Villas draw inspiration from the Ambalama, traditional Sri Lankan communal rest pavilions where travellers once paused, and village life naturally gathered.

Open, airy spaces and monolithic columns echo this architectural language, designed to offer both shelter and stillness. Set amidst lush tropical spice garden landscapes with views of age old UNESCO listed mountains, Aarunya reinterprets these timeless elements through a contemporary lens, creating a retreat that honours heritage and nature, while offering modern comfort and warm Sri Lankan hospitality.

Experience the Aarunya lifestyle, your immersive nature retreat in the heart of Sri Lanka.

Aarogya, a path to holistic wellbeing.

An immersive journey designed to restore natural equilibrium, realign energy, and reconnect guests with the rhythms of Sri Lanka.

Rooted in the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda and enhanced through personalised rituals, mindful therapies, and doctor-led consultations, Aarogya offers a deeply restorative experience.

Each Wellness Retreat programme is guided by an experienced Ayurvedic physician, ensuring both clinical integrity and refined hospitality standards.

In addition to a dedicated Ayurveda facility, each Aahaasa destination features a spa shaped by its surroundings, drawing from the natural essence of the island.
At Aarunya Nature Resort in Kandy, this takes form through the estate’s spice gardens, where treatments are inspired by the botanicals grown on the land itself.

Set within the mountain estate, the wellness centre unfolds in quiet layers:

Four treatment rooms
A doctor’s consultation room
An outdoor bathhouse of stone and water
An infrared sauna
Herbal and flower baths

And a stillness that belongs to the altitude.

Each journey begins with understanding.
Doshas. Rhythm. Imbalance.

Therapies are shaped around the individual, unhurried and intentional.

Retreats from four nights onward, or individual treatments taken in their own time.
Ayurveda or aromatherapy, each designed to restore and rebalance.

A bath drawn with estate-grown botanicals.
Steam rising into mountain air.
The body returning to itself.

Wellness here is not separate from the landscape.

It is the landscape.

The Aarunya Nature Pavilion, opened this February, is built from the same materials it studies.
Bamboo. Timber. Mud brick.

A structure shaped by the land, set within extraordinary biodiversity and overlooking the Knuckles Mountain Range, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site.

It sits at the heart of Aarunya’s journey towards becoming Sri Lanka’s first fully biodynamic hotel.

The pavilion is a working centre for conservation, research and education.
PhD students. Biodynamic specialists. Naturalists. Collaboration with visiting researchers, professors, and universities.

Here, biodiversity is not observed from a distance.
It is lived, studied, and protected.

Within the estate, a critically endangered species, the Moore’s Shrub Frog, has been identified and safeguarded.

For guests, this is where the experience deepens.

Nature walks guided by in-house naturalists.
Birdsong across an estate rich in endemic species.
Paths winding through spice, tea and paddy.

The land is cultivated in layers.
Tea intercropped with vanilla and pepper.
Soil renewed through biodynamic practice.
Water treated and returned.

The pavilion is also the starting point.
For learning. For exploration. For connection.

A quieter way forward.
Rooted in knowledge.
In balance with the land.

We are honoured that Aarunya Nature Resort has been named to TIME World’s Greatest Places of 2026, a global list ‘recognising the most extraordinary destinations, hotels, and experiences across the planet.’

Set in the mountains overlooking the Knuckles Mountain Range, Aarunya was created as a sanctuary where nature, wellness and Sri Lankan culture meet.

This recognition belongs to our team, our artisans, and the guests who understood what we were trying to build.

A place not simply to stay,
but to pause,
and see where we are in life.

High tea at Aarunya is served at the Aahaasa Tea Pavilion, set within the working tea and spice estate.

Tea grows around you. Cinnamon in the garden below. The mountain air moving through a handmade timber pavilion open to the landscape.

Finger sandwiches. Warm scones. Sri Lankan sweets.
Tea brewed from leaves picked in the surrounding mountains, robust flavour, to the delicates of higher altitudes.

Beyond the pavilion, the Knuckles Mountain Range shifts in the late afternoon light. The mountains soften. Colours turn slowly to gold.

This is not hotel afternoon tea.

No lobby. No piano. No marble.

Just the estate in its afternoon rhythm.
And the quiet pleasure of sitting with a cup of tea from the land, like no other.

You wake to this at Aarunya. The infinity pool gathers the landscape and holds it still. Palms lean inward, and the jungle falls away beyond the edge.

Here, you stand at the meeting point of the built world and the wild, and for a moment, the only thing moving is the light.

Some mornings the mist lifts quickly, and the mountains sharpen within minutes. On others, it lingers well into the morning, leaving the valley suspended in that quiet space between night and day, as though it has not quite decided to wake.
