Our Story
Nestled in the annals of Sri Lankan history, the old-world charm of Kirinda Walauwa gives a unique insight into village life with authentic Sri Lankan hospitality while at the same time having contemporary comforts. The 200 year old home, now run by a descendant of its original builders, is built true to its heritage: thick stone and clay walls house, airy bedrooms that open into a beautiful central courtyard (traditionally known as a 'meda midula') which was a standard feature in aristocratic mansions in the past blend seamlessly with the modern bathrooms, Wi-Fi, heated water among other things. The traditional courtyard lets the morning sunlight stream into the house and the blowing of the wind makes it cool on a hot afternoon. It also gives a touch of magic on a full moon night! The family owned land that Kirinda Walauwa sits in has lush foliage and we take pride in the fact that most of the food that comes to our guests' plate comes home-grown: from the rice, to vegetables and fruits as well as the coffee.
Kirinda Walauwa which dates back to over 200 years is an ancient mansion of an Aristocratic Family. “Kirinda” is the name of the village and “Walauwa” means the home of an Aristocratic Kandyan Family, is situated about 16 km from the hill Capital of Sri Lanka, Kandy in the city of Gampola. The “Walauwa” lies in a picturesque valley in a 12 acre estate of mixed plantation of spices, coconut and fruits surrounded by mountains and lush green paddy fields. Well maintained tarred drive way leads to the “Walauwa” with four hairpin bends and beautiful flowering shrubs and foliage on either side. It has a naturally laid out garden of many colorful flowering plants, foliage and an oval shaped lawn lies in front of the house. The house itself is about eight to ten generations old, even though each generation has renovated and has added modern conveniences for their comfort; it still has not lost its natural old charm. The structure remains the same; it can be seen by the thickness of the walls, all built in solid stone and plastered in clay. The house consists of large airy rooms, a long verandah which opens out to the garden. Rooms are with attached Bath and Toilets and hot water are taste fully designed with wooden furniture. We are perfectly suited for the guest seeking to get away from the busy-ness of life in the city and especially if they want to sample peaceful village life and local culture.
