Even when the world’s most dedicated mammal-watchers come to Mannar,
They have one specific goal in mind: The Rusty-spotted cat. 🐾

Last night, we were thrilled to host our first travel agent specifically scouting for this tiny feline, alongside two guests from Belgium who travel the globe to see the world's rarest mammals.

While the Rusty-spotted cat is a common (and favorite!) resident around Palmyrah House, seeing them in the wild remains a massive "bucket-list" win for international enthusiasts. We’re happy to report a successful sighting.

The net was woven by hand, pulled tight under the Mannar sun - and when it rose from the water, it brought with it the ocean's finest.

You can see it in their eyes, in the wide smiles of hands still holding the catch.

Those same crabs, kissed by the sea, are then embraced by spices that have lived on this coastline for generations - slow-cooked, deep in flavour, and finally wrapped in a palmyrah leaf, just as nature and tradition intended.

A prehistoric guest has decided to drop by. Our resident mugger crocodile was recently spotted basking in the sun near the pond, just a stone's throw from the swimming pool.

It is a rare and thrilling sight to see such a magnificent reptile in its natural habitat, perfectly at home within the lush 14-hectare forest of Palmyrah House. While he keeps a respectful distance, his presence adds an undeniable touch of wild Mannar magic to the property.

Mannar is currently having a major “flamboyance” alert.

We left the shade of Palmyrah House to catch our seasonal celebrities in action. The Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) have officially turned the salt marshes into a rosy resort. These long-distance commuters have flown thousands of kilometers - likely from the Rann of Kutch - just to "shrimp" out in our nutrient-rich lagoons.

Field Notes from the Session:
+ The "Pink" Diet: We watched them in their classic "head-down" pose, using their specialized beaks to filter-feed on brine shrimp and algae.

+ Marsh Magic: Mannar’s hypersaline habitat is the perfect stage for their social "dance." From the grey plumage of the sub-adults to the vibrant coral of the mature birds, the gradient was stunning.

+The Takeoff: Nothing beats that sudden flash of black primary feathers when a "stand" of flamingos takes to the sky.

It was a superb session for the group - there’s just something about the Mannar horizon that makes these elegant waders look even more iconic.
