Esala Poya Day is the name of the full moon who occurs usually un July.

For Sri Lankan Buddhist the Esala Poya is very important as several essentials events took place on Esala Poya day.

For example on this poya, Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon two months after attaining Enlightenment. Known as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (the wheel of Dhamma), this sermon was delivered to His five disciples Kondangna, Wappa, Bhaddiya, Mahanama and Assaji at Isipathanaya in Benares (Baranasi). In this sermon He told them that there are two extremes of living – one is a “Life of Pleasure” and the other a “Life of Self-mortification”. The Blessed One advised them to follow the middle path which consists of purity, virtue and righteousness.

VISIT : The ancient city of Sigiriya

The ruins of the capital built by the parricidal King Kassapa I lie on the steep slopes and at the summit of a granite peak standing some 180m high (the 'Lion's Rock', which dominates the jungle from all sides). You can hike to the top of Sigiriya to explore the ancient ruins and you can also hike to the top of the Pidurangala rock to have this stunning view of the lion's rock.
