A traditional Sri Lankan meal would consist of rice accompanied by a variety of meat or fish dishes and vegetables prepared using locally grown spices including cinnamon with plenty of fresh coconut milk or grated coconut. The distinct flavour of Sri Lankan fare is attributable to the mix of mild freshly ground spices which is different from other Asian Cuisine. The staff at Villa Atulya will be willing to share the secrets of food preparation with you in case you are interested. Sri Lankan breakfasts on offer can be delicious rice cooked in coconut milk (Kiribath) served with traditional Southern style fish curry (ambul thiyal), fried onions (seeni sambol) and onion sambol with dried fish or string hoppers (steamed rice noodles) accompanied by potatoes cooked in coconut milk , coconut sambol with chillies and fish or meat curry. Other options include hoppers (pancakes made of rice flour with crispy edges and a soft bread like centre) or pittu (steamed mixture of rice flour and grated coconut) or traditional pol rotti (flat bread made of wheat flour and grated coconut). All items will be accompanied by traditional curries and fresh fruit. Sri Lankan lunches will be rice (red or white) with many vegetables and meat or fish curries followed by fresh fruit or buffalo curd served with treacle, a rich sweetener prepared from the sap of coconut flowers. Sri Lankan dinner would normally be string hoppers, hoppers or pittu. The stay
The rooms at Villa Atulya are spacious and offer fabulous views of the ocean. All rooms have access to the garden or a private patio area where you can relax on an antique lounge chair with colourful cushions made of hand woven cotton fabrics made in Sri Lanka. You will be able to watch both the sunrise and the sunset from the patio of the Villa. The surrounding beach offers a natural habitat rich with many varieties of marine life including sea turtle, crabs, lobsters and colourful fish. There are stilt fishermen that you can observe for hours on end or colourful fishing boats that go out to sea in the evening and return with the catch of the day in the morning. At night you can observe the lights of these fishing boats. The horizon offers a view of the many ships that pass by the busy shipping lanes south of Sri Lanka. Activities on offer
If you decide to venture out of the peace and serenity of Villa Atulya, the city of Galle is less than an hour away by road. Matara, which is a much smaller town is only 5 miles away. There are many tourist attractions in the south of Sri Lanka within easy access of Villa Atulya including the famous Thalaramba Reef and Mirissa Hill cinnamon plantation. In case you wish to go on a Whale watching expedition, the Sri Lankan Navy offers organised tours on a large vessel departing from Galle Harbour. Smaller boat tours are also available from Mirrissa fisheries harbour.
