VISIT SRI LANKA, SRI LANKA IS SAFE!!
ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE FOREIGN MINISTRY OF SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka Foreign Ministry reiterates that country remains safe and open for tourists despite ongoing crisis situation
Fri, Apr 8, 2022, 10:39 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 08, Colombo: Responding to the recent revision of the United States Travel Advisory on Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the advisory remains at Level 3 and reiterated that the island remains safe and open for tourists.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that attention has been focused on the revision of the U.S. Travel Advisory on Sri Lanka as at 6 April 2022.

The Ministry recalled that since June 2021, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Travel Advisory for Sri Lanka has remained at Level 3, and as such has not been newly introduced in the latest revision.

In addition, the language related to ‘terrorism’ was introduced following the Easter Sunday attacks and has stayed consistent since April 2019.

It is understood that the reference to terrorism in the U.S. Travel Advisory is based on standard language included in U.S. Travel Advisories around the world where a risk of terrorism exists or has existed, and as such is not specific to Sri Lanka. The Ministry also pointed out that currently a U.S. Travel Advisory at Level 4 is applicable to many countries, whereas Sri Lanka is at Level 3.

The U.S. Department of State updated the Travel Advisory for Sri Lanka on 6th April recommending American citizens to reconsider traveling to the country "due to COVID-19 and fuel and medicine shortages."

The Travel Advisory noted that Sri Lanka is experiencing shortages of fuel and cooking gas as well as some medicines and essential food items amidst power cuts, due to the ongoing economic situation in country.

“There have recently been protests over the economic situation and queues at gas stations, grocery stores, and some pharmacies. Protests have occurred throughout the country and have mostly been peaceful. In some instances, police have used water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesters. There have also been daily planned power outages across the island, as well as some unplanned power outages, as fuel for backup generators is increasingly scarce. Public transportation in some instances has been limited or curtailed,” the advisory described the situation.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that the country remains safe and open for tourists.

“Sri Lanka continues to welcome travelers to the country and remains committed to provide all visitors with the utmost care and service. The recent peaceful protests have not targeted tourists or tourist destinations. All visitors to the country may travel freely throughout the country and all tourist destinations remain open,” the Foreign Ministry said.

According to the Foreign Affairs ministry, the tourism industry in Sri Lanka is gradually emerging from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and as at 29 March 2022, tourist arrivals to the country stood at 280,026.

The Ministry noted that CNN’s “where to travel in 2022” had featured Colombo in their travel list.
