When you look out from the terrace of Floating Mountain Villa, you are witnessing one of Sri Lanka’s most poignant transformations. Created in the 1980s as part of the Mahaweli Development Project, the Kotmale Reservoir didn’t just bring light and power to the nation; it asked for a sacrifice.
Over 50 villages and over 50 ancient temples and shrines* were submerged to create the reservoir. On the rare days when the water level recedes, the ruins of the Kadadora Viharaya, the sunken temple… emerge from the depths, a ghostly and beautiful reminder of the valley’s heritage. The massive white stupa you see in the distance, the Mahaweli Maha Seya, was built specifically to honour those lost temples.
At 3,700 feet, we have the best seat in the house to witness this living history. It is a view that commands respect, a silent tribute to the resilience and the legacy of the Kotmale valley.
Did you know that a "Sunken Temple" rests beneath this view? Tell us, does knowing the history of a place change how you look at the landscape?
