🛕 WHERE LEGENDS COME ALIVE — Seetha Eliya Kovil, Nuwara Eliya 🌿
📜 THE HISTORY & LEGEND
Deep in the misty hills of Nuwara Eliya lies one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred and mythologically significant sites — the Seetha Amman Kovil (Seetha Eliya Temple). This is widely believed to be the ONLY temple in the world dedicated to Princess Sita, the beloved consort of Lord Rama from the ancient Hindu epic, the Ramayana. 🙏
According to legend, this is the very spot where the powerful demon king Ravana held Sita captive after abducting her from India. While in captivity, Sita is said to have bathed in the cool mountain stream flowing beside the temple and sat upon the nearby rock in prayer, waiting faithfully for Lord Rama to rescue her. 🌊🖤
This sacred area is also known as the Ashoka Vatika — the legendary garden of Ravana where Sita was kept. Today’s Hakgala Botanical Garden, located just 1km away, is believed to be part of this ancient garden. 🌿
⚛️ FASCINATING FACTS FOR TRAVELLERS
👣 Hanuman’s Footprints — On the rocky bank across the stream, you can see ancient circular depressions believed to be the footprints of Ravana’s elephant, and others believed to be the footprints of Lord Hanuman, who came here to deliver a message of hope to Sita.
🔥 The Black Soil Mystery — The surrounding area is covered in black soil, which locals believe was scorched when Hanuman set Lanka ablaze during his daring rescue mission.
💧 The Cursed Water — There is one spot in the stream where the water has a strange, unpleasant taste. Legend says Sita placed a curse on this spot during her captivity.
🏛️ Built in 1998 — Although the current temple structure was built as recently as 1998 in South Indian architectural style, three ancient idols including one of Sita were discovered at this site, believed to have been worshipped here for centuries. Today, statues of Lord Rama, Sita Devi, Lakshmana and Hanuman stand within.
🛕 A Sacred Festival — The most prominent festival celebrated here is Rama Navami, drawing thousands of Hindu devotees from Sri Lanka and India.
