COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka has emerged as the worldโs top trending wellness travel destination for 2026, recording a remarkable 100% surge in global demand, according to data highlighted by TimeOut Asia, part of TimeOut Worldwide, citing the latest State of Retreats 2026 Report by BookRetreats.com.
The report reveals a significant shift in global travel trends, with wellness tourism rapidly gaining ground as travellers move beyond traditional holidays focused on leisure and sightseeing.
Instead, more tourists are seeking experiences centred on health, mindfulness, and rejuvenation.
A survey of 1,040 travellers in the United States found that 49% plan to spend on wellness retreats in 2026, placing such experiences ahead of spa treatments, supplements, and even gym memberships.
The growing popularity of this sector is reflected in projections by the Global Wellness Institute, which forecasts the wellness tourism industry to reach a massive US$1.4 trillion by 2027, underscoring its rising global importance.
Sri Lankaโs top ranking comes as the country records the highest year-on-year growth in wellness travel interest on the BookRetreats.com platform.
Industry observers say the islandโs long-standing reputation for holistic healing has played a crucial role in driving this surge. Sri Lanka is widely known for its authentic, doctor-led Ayurvedic traditions, with practices dating back more than 2,000 years, offering visitors a deeply rooted wellness experience.
Affordability has also contributed to Sri Lankaโs appeal, with three- to four-day wellness retreats starting at approximately US$372.18, making it an attractive option compared to other global destinations.
