The pearl of the Indian ocean obeserve the "Vesak" (Poya day) to commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha today, which are all said to have happened on the same date. It is held around the month of May or Vesak, based on the lunar calendar. Celebrations include dances, poems, parades, processions, deep meditation, theatrical performances, and puppet shows.
On the Poson full moon poya the isladers celebrate and remember the great gift of Dhamma that Arahant Mahinda brought to the Land of Lanka. In this sermon people learn about the three people who arise in the world for the great benefit of all living beings: a Samma Sambuddha, an arahant disciple of the Supreme.
In the island of Ceylon, it is customary to visit temples, whatever they are, with bare feet. Even visitors must comply. The tradition is to buy flowers at the entrance of the temples to make offerings. For the Sri Lankans, the image of Buddha is sacred.

On this day Sanghas or Buddhist monks preach sermons. Many devotees observe “Seela”. Usually children are making Wesak lanterns specially and they light them at night. In day time “Dan Sal”or refreshment stalls from where food is given free are held.

Other than the exclusive religious aspects of the festival, Sri Lankans decorate their houses and public places and arrange for various cultural events.

Tourists can witness all kinds of beautiful lantern decorations, lot of celebrations, free snacks and foods distributions also can be witnessed all around the island.

It is a must to respect and adhere to the customs and cultures in the island, as for poya day, alcohol and consumption of beef is prohibited 🚫, please do comply and honour the traditions and respect the nation while observing vesak.
