A sub-adult White-bellied Sea Eagle seen with its catch from our new Elephant Point viewing platform.

The mottled brown and grey plumage… a younger bird, still finding its wings before the iconic white and grey of adulthood arrives. They are known to fly directly into the sun or at right angles to it, a tactic used to prevent casting a shadow over the water that might alert fish to their presence.

Two directions from the same seat.

Indian Ocean on one side. Heda Oya estuary and mangrove jungle on the other.
Our new open-air terrace doesn't compete with the view.
It just puts you in it.

At Kudakalliya, we don't do mass-produced. Our kitchen is run on local rhythm... fresh ingredients, traditional tools, and the kind of soul you only get from home cooking. This is authentic Sri Lankan hospitality, stripped back to the essentials.

Once considered virtually extinct in Sri Lanka’s dry zone, the knob-billed duck is now a very scarce, perhaps re-colonising resident or irregular visitor. Here it and a lone egret wade the shallow ponds of Kumana National Park, focused on the morning forage. When you stay at Kudakalliya with us, we can organise these wildlife adventures for you. No crowds, just wings overhead and the slow rhythm of nature.

There's something magical about the moment the sun starts to dip behind the inland hills and the mangroves of the Heda Oya estuary. At Kudakalliya, we have the rare advantage of a double horizon... the ocean handles the dawn, and the river, paddy fields along with the Monaragala Mountain Range claims the dusk. The sky turns these shades of pink and gold when the rest of the world fades out. This is the quiet side of the coast, exactly as it should be.

Your Caretaker, Murali with today’s essentials: fresh snake gourd, drumsticks (murunga), curry leaves, and raw cinnamon sticks. At Kudakalliya, we don't have a fixed menu. We follow the rhythm of the soil and the season. Murali doesn’t just cook; he hosts with soul. Every meal is prepared with a homely touch that connects you directly to the land. The only rush is getting the spices just right.

9.7 out of 10. Verified by real travellers who found us in Arugam Bay of over 370 million worldwide. 🏆

This isn't a number we chased. It's what happens when a place on the edge of the Indian Ocean, the East coast of Sri Lanka, is cared for the way it deserves to be... and when every guest who stays with us feels it.

Kudakalliya Beach House has been awarded the Booking.com Traveller Review Award 2026. To every guest who stayed, explored, and took the time to share their experience... this belongs to you as much as it does to us. 🙏
If you've been thinking about it, now you know what to expect.

A Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus) using thermals to patrol above us. Known locally as the Bamunu Piyakussa or Brahmana Ukussa, these native residents are the original scouts of the Sri Lanka's East Coast and popularly seen in Kudakalliya, Panama & Kumana coastline as well. With their distinctive white heads and rich chestnut-brown bodies, they’ve been revered for centuries as messengers of the gods and are a reminder that we’re just guests in their sanctuary.
