With a shared commitment to the natural environment that surrounds Jetwing Vil Uyana, our team marked World Environment Day through a series of meaningful initiatives focused on conservation and community care.

Karada, Kumbuk, and Thimbiri saplings were planted along the road leading to the hotel, selected for their suitability to the dry zone and their ability to provide shade, strengthen the roadside, and help reduce the effects of flooding and erosion over time.

The day's efforts also extended beyond that. Associates took part in a Shramadana campaign, cleaning the areas surrounding the hotel up to Rangirigama Lake. Plastic, polythene, tin, and glass waste were collected and carefully segregated for responsible disposal.

It was a meaningful reminder that environmental stewardship is not only about nurturing what will grow tomorrow, but also about caring for the places we share today.

In celebration of International Day of Biological Diversity, we honour the living landscape of Jetwing Vil Uyana, a 27-acre wetland sanctuary where paddy fields, lakes, forest and waterways exist in balance and harmony with one another, becoming an integral part of the experience of staying here.

Over the years, this restored habitat has grown into a refuge for an extraordinary range of life, from endemic birds and fishing cats to reptiles, amphibians, butterflies and the many smaller species that often go unnoticed, yet remain essential to the ecosystem. Whether it is the sound of birdsong carried across the wetlands at dawn, or the subtle presence of nocturnal wildlife after dusk, nature reveals itself here in ways both striking and understated.

Another remarkable bird sighting within our wetland sanctuary.

Among the more elusive visitors here, the Yellow Bittern keeps largely to the quiet margins, moving through reed beds, lotus-covered ponds, and the soft edges of surrounding paddy fields. Rarely seen in the open, it relies on restraint as much as cover. At the slightest hint of disturbance, it draws itself upright, neck extended, blending seamlessly into the reeds it calls home.

Encounters such as these are brief and often unexpected, which makes them all the more rewarding. Small reminders of the delicate life that continues, undisturbed, within this landscape.

For the first time in our 20-year journey, Jetwing Vil Uyana came together with Hotel Sigiriya to host an Awurudu Uthsawaya for our associates, a full of tradition and cherished memories.

The celebrations unfolded with laughter, camaderie and moments of shared joy, from spirited games to the lively Gama Haraha Diveema.

Just a ten-minute walk along a village path from Jetwing Vil Uyana leads you past paddy fields nourished by the waters of Rangirigama Tank, and into a thriving pocket of birdlife.

The tank sustains the surrounding fields, but it also draws an extraordinary gathering of water birds. Spot-billed Pelicans drift across open water, Painted Storks and Open-billed Storks settle along the edges, while cormorants skim the surface. From bare branches above, raptors keep a steady watch, adding balance to the scene.

Village tanks like Rangirigama are living ecosystems, places where resident and migratory birds feed, rest, and move with the seasons, shaped as much by nature as by the communities that have depended on them for generations.
