Uuti's (ඌටි) Silent Stride in Kumana National Park!

- Time: 4:50 PM
- Location: Kumana National Park
- Trekking Partner: Samantha
- Trekker: Kasun (Wildlife Department)

While journeying through the serene landscapes of Kumana, we had an extraordinary yet heart-wrenching encounter. From afar, a familiar silhouette emerged: "Uuti (ඌටි)," the elusive leopard. We noticed something unusual: Uuti wasn’t in his usual robust spirit.

His stomach appeared flat, a sign of hunger over the past few days. He was nibbling on grass nature's pharmacy. Just like many wild animals, leopards too rely on their instincts to heal themselves. Uuti may be battling a stomach ache or diarrhoea, seeking relief from this herbal remedy.

This moment was a reminder of how raw and real life in the wild truly is. Every sighting isn't just a thrill; it's an opportunity to learn and respect these majestic beings' resilience and fragility.

We hope Uuti recovers swiftly and graces the park with his fierce, untamed spirit once more. 💛

Protecting Nature, One Step at a Time.

Yesterday began an important journey towards making the Yala National Park area a plastic-free zone! Our dedicated Yala Naturalist team came together for the first phase of this massive cleanup, removing plastics scattered near the park's border.

This initiative isn't just about beautifying the environment – it's about preventing the spread of diseases with the rainy season approaching and stopping wild animals from accidentally consuming harmful plastics.

The Yala Naturalist team is committed to continuing this mission, with many more cleanup projects planned. Let's protect nature, not just admire it!

Say hello to one of Yala's quirkiest residents the Sri Lankan Sloth Bear!

With their long shaggy fur and signature sickle-shaped claws, these night owls might look a bit grizzly, but they're really just slow-moving snackers with a sweet tooth (honey, anyone?).

Their diet? Mostly ants and termites! But don’t let their chilled-out vibe fool you, they’ve mastered the art of sucking up insects through a gap in their teeth. Yep, no central upper incisors make these bears the ultimate nature vacuum cleaners!

Although they’re nocturnal and prefer a quiet life, these vulnerable giants need our attention. Habitat loss and illegal hunting put them at risk, so let's do our part to protect these gentle creatures.

Mahoora tented safari camps Udawalawe National Park

This national park spans approximately 31,000 hectares and is located in the southern dry zone. The park cuts across two of the Southern Provinces and includes the Udawalawe Reservoir. The most prominent peak called Ulgala is located in the west of the park. It rises up to a height of nearly 380 metres from the lowest point in the area which is at 100 metres above sea level. The most topographical features are the Kalthota Escarpment and the spectacular Diyawinne Falls to the north.

The reservoir itself is situated inside the park, and draws its water from the Horton Plains Reserve, the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary and the Haputale area. It retains its status as an important area for aquatic birds. Udawalawe National Park is the second most popular park after Yala and is famed for its resident Sri Lankan Elephant population which can be seen in large herds.

The Udawalawe National Park is also instrumental in the Elephant Transit Home - a project that is geared towards the conservation of the Sri Lankan Elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) which is a recognized subspecies of the Asian Elephant and is now endangered. This transit camp is an orphanage of sorts where abandoned, injured or orphaned elephants are treated and then released back into the park. It is possible to observe these elephants from a safe distance.
