The women behind The FlipFlop 💛
Meet Sachi’s mum and his sisters, Mekala and Watsala.
They may not always be the ones you see online, but they are an important part of the family behind our little guesthouse. They help, care, organise and somehow always know what needs to be done – often before anyone else does.
The FlipFlop is not a hotel run by strangers. It is a family home, and these three wonderful women are part of its heart.

Das sind Sachis Mama und seine Schwestern Mekala und Watsala.
Online sieht man sie vielleicht nicht immer, aber sie sind ein wichtiger Teil der Familie hinter unserem kleinen Guesthouse. Sie helfen, kümmern sich, organisieren und wissen irgendwie immer schon, was zu tun ist – meistens noch bevor es jemand anderes bemerkt.
Das FlipFlop ist kein Hotel, das von Fremden geführt wird. Es ist ein Familienhaus – und diese drei wunderbaren Frauen gehören zu seinem Herzen.

World Animal Day may have been yesterday, but at The FlipFlop every day belongs to Flash.
Our four-legged head of entertainment takes his job very seriously: run away, find the ring and return as if nothing happened.
Life at The FlipFlop simply wouldn’t be the same without him.
Der Welttierschutztag war zwar schon gestern, aber im FlipFlop gehört eigentlich jeder Tag Flash.
Unser vierbeiniger Unterhaltungschef nimmt seine Aufgabe sehr ernst: weglaufen, den Ring holen und zurückkommen, als wäre nichts gewesen.
Ohne ihn wäre das Leben im FlipFlop einfach nicht dasselbe.

Good to know about Sri Lanka!
You’ll see these colourful Buddhist flags all over Sri Lanka – especially near temples and around Poya days.
But they are much more than decoration.
The colours traditionally represent different qualities of Buddhism:
Blue – loving-kindness and peace
Yellow – the Middle Way
Red – blessings and wisdom
White – purity and liberation
Orange – the teachings of the Buddha
The final multicoloured stripe combines all five colours and represents their unity.
So next time you see these flags dancing in the Sri Lankan breeze, you’ll know there is a whole story behind them. 😊

Diese bunten buddhistischen Flaggen begegnen euch in Sri Lanka überall – besonders rund um Tempel und an Poya-Tagen.
Aber sie sind viel mehr als nur Dekoration.
Die Farben stehen traditionell für verschiedene Werte des Buddhismus:

Gelb – den Mittleren Weg
Rot – Segen und Weisheit
Weiß – Reinheit und Befreiung
Orange – die Lehre Buddhas
Der letzte mehrfarbige Streifen vereint alle fünf Farben und steht für ihre Zusammengehörigkeit.

Binara Poya
Every full moon day in Sri Lanka is a Poya Day – a Buddhist public holiday with religious meaning.
Many people visit temples, wear white, make offerings and spend time in prayer or meditation. On Poya Days, the sale of alcohol is prohibited and some shops and businesses may also be closed.
Binara Poya, celebrated this year on 26 September, is especially important because it commemorates the establishment of the Buddhist Bhikkhuni Order – the order of Buddhist nuns.
So if you are travelling through Sri Lanka on a full moon day and everything suddenly feels a little quieter… now you know why.

Jeder Vollmondtag ist in Sri Lanka ein Poya Day – ein buddhistischer Feiertag mit religiöser Bedeutung.
Viele Menschen besuchen Tempel, tragen Weiß, bringen Opfergaben und verbringen Zeit mit Gebet oder Meditation. An Poya-Tagen ist der Verkauf von Alkohol verboten und manche Geschäfte bleiben ebenfalls geschlossen.
Binara Poya, dieses Jahr am 26. September, erinnert besonders an die Gründung des buddhistischen Bhikkhuni-Ordens – also des Ordens buddhistischer Nonnen.
Wenn ihr also an einem Vollmondtag durch Sri Lanka reist und plötzlich alles ein bisschen ruhiger wirkt … jetzt wisst ihr warum.

Dinner by the beach
Good food tastes even better with sand between your toes and the sound of the ocean in the background.
A table by the beach, Sri Lankan flavours, a warm evening… honestly, we don’t need much more. 😉
This is one of those little moments that make a holiday in Unawatuna feel very special.

Dinner am Strand
Gutes Essen schmeckt irgendwie noch besser mit Sand unter den Füßen und dem Meeresrauschen im Hintergrund.
Ein Tisch am Strand, sri-lankische Küche, ein warmer Abend … ganz ehrlich, viel mehr brauchen wir eigentlich nicht. 😉
Genau diese kleinen Momente machen einen Urlaub in Unawatuna für uns so besonders.

Elephants of Sri Lanka!
Big ears, big appetite – and sometimes absolutely no interest in traffic rules.
Sri Lanka is home to the Sri Lankan elephant, a subspecies of the Asian elephant. They are intelligent, social animals and seeing them in the wild is unforgettable.
But their habitat is getting smaller, which can lead to conflicts between elephants and people.
That’s why we believe the best way to experience them is simple:
from a respectful distance, in the wild – no riding, no shows.
And if an elephant decides the road belongs to him?
Well… you wait.
Elefanten in Sri Lanka!
Große Ohren, großer Appetit – und manchmal keinerlei Interesse an Verkehrsregeln.
In Sri Lanka lebt der Sri-Lanka-Elefant, eine Unterart des Asiatischen Elefanten. Die Tiere sind intelligent, sozial und in freier Natur einfach beeindruckend.
Doch ihr Lebensraum wird kleiner, wodurch es immer häufiger zu Konflikten zwischen Menschen und Elefanten kommt.
Deshalb gilt für uns:
Am schönsten erlebt man Elefanten mit Abstand und in freier Natur – ohne Reiten und ohne Shows.
Und wenn ein Elefant entscheidet, dass ihm die Straße gehört?
Dann wartet man eben.

Fruit of the Month: Pineapple 🍍
This month’s fruit needs almost no introduction – but in Sri Lanka, pineapple is something special.
Sweet, juicy and wonderfully aromatic, fresh pineapple is one of those fruits that somehow tastes even better under the tropical sun.
And for Christiane, there is no competition:
Pineapple is her absolute favourite fruit in Sri Lanka – she could probably eat it all day. Sri Lanka grows different varieties of pineapple. One of them, Mauritius, is especially sweet and popular for eating fresh, while other varieties are also used for juices, jams, chutneys and more.
And one little reminder: a pineapple doesn’t grow on a tree. It grows close to the ground in the middle of a plant – something that still surprises quite a few people.
Fresh, chilled and sliced… that's all we need.

Frucht des Monats: Ananas 🍍
Unsere Frucht des Monats muss man eigentlich kaum vorstellen – und trotzdem ist Ananas in Sri Lanka noch einmal etwas Besonderes.
Süß, saftig und wunderbar aromatisch – irgendwie schmeckt eine frische Ananas unter der tropischen Sonne einfach noch ein bisschen besser.
Und für Christiane gibt es sowieso keine Diskussion:
Ananas ist ihre absolute Lieblingsfrucht in Sri Lanka – sie könnte sie vermutlich den ganzen Tag essen.
In Sri Lanka werden verschiedene Ananassorten angebaut. Eine davon ist Mauritius, die besonders süß ist und sehr gern frisch gegessen wird. Ananas wird aber auch für Säfte, Marmeladen, Chutneys und vieles mehr verwendet.
Und ein kleiner Fun Fact: Ananas wächst nicht auf einem Baum. Sie wächst ganz nah am Boden, mitten aus einer Pflanze heraus – was tatsächlich noch viele überrascht.
Frisch, gekühlt und aufgeschnitten … mehr brauchen wir eigentlich nicht.

Beach Day in Unawatuna...
Some days don't need a plan.
Just grab your towel, head to the beach and let the ocean decide what happens next.
Swimming, playing in the waves, lying in the sand… and suddenly a few hours are gone. 😉
That’s one of the things we love about life in Unawatuna:
the beach is always there when you need a little break.

Manche Tage brauchen einfach keinen Plan.
Handtuch schnappen, ab an den Strand – und dann entscheidet das Meer, wie der Tag weitergeht.
Ein bisschen schwimmen, in den Wellen spielen, im Sand liegen … und plötzlich sind ein paar Stunden vorbei.
Genau das lieben wir am Leben in Unawatuna:
Der Strand ist immer da, wenn man einfach mal eine kleine Auszeit braucht.

Today we celebrate another very special person in our FlipFlop family: Watsala, Sachi’s eldest sister.
Family is an important part of life in Sri Lanka – and it is also a big part of what makes The FlipFlop feel like home.
Watsala belongs to this story too, and today is her day. So from all of us at The FlipFlop:

We wish you lots of happiness, health, laughter and many beautiful moments in the year ahead. 💛

Heute feiern wir wieder einen ganz besonderen Menschen aus unserer FlipFlop-Familie: Watsala, Sachis älteste Schwester.
Familie spielt in Sri Lanka eine große Rolle – und sie ist auch ein wichtiger Teil dessen, was das FlipFlop so familiär und persönlich macht.
Auch Watsala gehört zu dieser Geschichte, und heute ist ihr Tag. Deshalb sagen wir alle gemeinsam:
