A SPECIAL TIME IN UNAWATUNA
Once a year, the area around Welle Devalaya becomes the heart of a very special celebration.
During the traditional Esala festival, Unawatuna fills with music, drums, lights, religious ceremonies and many visitors. For several days, local families come together to honour their traditions and celebrate as a community.
Welle Devalaya is located on the rocks at the end of Unawatuna Beach and has been closely connected to the people, fishermen and history of our village for generations.
For travellers, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience a side of Unawatuna that goes far beyond beaches and holidays: living culture, faith and community.
Please remember to dress respectfully when visiting religious places, remove your shoes before entering and enjoy the celebrations with consideration for the local traditions.

EINE BESONDERE ZEIT IN UNAWATUNA
Einmal im Jahr wird die Umgebung des Welle Devalaya zum Mittelpunkt eines ganz besonderen Festes.
Während des traditionellen Esala-Festivals erfüllt sich Unawatuna für mehrere Tage mit Musik, Trommeln, Lichtern, religiösen Zeremonien und vielen Besucherinnen und Besuchern. Familien aus der Umgebung kommen zusammen, um ihre Traditionen zu pflegen und gemeinsam zu feiern.
Das Welle Devalaya befindet sich auf den Felsen am Ende des Strandes von Unawatuna und ist seit Generationen eng mit den Menschen, den Fischern und der Geschichte unseres Ortes verbunden.
Für Reisende ist das eine wunderbare Gelegenheit, eine Seite von Unawatuna kennenzulernen, die weit über Strand und Urlaub hinausgeht: gelebte Kultur, Glaube und Gemeinschaft.
Bitte achtet beim Besuch religiöser Orte auf angemessene Kleidung, zieht vor dem Betreten eure Schuhe aus und begegnet den örtlichen Traditionen mit Respekt.

❤️ More than just a Guesthouse
When we created The FlipFlop, we didn't dream of building a big hotel.
We dreamed of creating a place where travellers feel at home.
A place where stories are shared over a morning coffee, where new friendships begin and where every guest is welcomed like family.
Most importantly, we wanted to create something meaningful for Sachi's parents – a place where they can continue doing what they love most: welcoming people from all over the world.
And then there's Flash...
Our four-legged family member, who believes every guest has come to visit him first.
When you stay at The FlipFlop, you're not just booking a room.
You're becoming part of our story and supporting a local Sri Lankan family.
For that, we are truly grateful.

Als wir The FlipFlop gegründet haben, war unser Traum nie, ein großes Hotel zu bauen.
Wir wollten einen Ort schaffen, an dem sich Reisende wie zu Hause fühlen.
Einen Ort, an dem bei einer Tasse Kaffee Geschichten erzählt werden, neue Freundschaften entstehen und Gäste herzlich willkommen sind.
Vor allem wollten wir einen Ort schaffen, an dem Sachi's Eltern auch heute noch das tun können, was sie am liebsten machen: Menschen aus aller Welt willkommen heißen.
Und dann gibt es natürlich noch Flash...
Unser vierbeiniges Familienmitglied, das überzeugt ist, dass jeder Gast eigentlich sein Gast ist.

Did you know? Every full moon is a public holiday in Sri Lanka.
Today is Esala Poya, one of the most important full moon days in the Buddhist calendar.
Poya Days are a time for reflection, prayer and spending time with family. Many Sri Lankans visit temples dressed in white, offer flowers, light candles and take part in religious ceremonies.

🌸 A few interesting facts:
• Every full moon is a public holiday in Sri Lanka.
• There are 12–13 Poya Days each year.
• On Poya Days, the sale of alcohol is prohibited.
• Many people choose to eat vegetarian meals on this day.

Esala Poya is especially significant because it commemorates Buddha's first sermon after his enlightenment and the beginning of the Buddhist Sangha (community of monks).
If you're visiting Sri Lanka during a Poya Day, take the opportunity to experience this peaceful and beautiful tradition with respect.

Esala Poya erinnert an Buddhas erste Lehrrede nach seiner Erleuchtung und an die Entstehung der buddhistischen Mönchsgemeinschaft.

Did you know? Why do almost all school children in Sri Lanka wear uniforms?
One of the first things you'll notice when exploring Sri Lanka in the morning is the many children walking to school in their uniforms.
But school uniforms are about more than tradition.
They help create a sense of equality, as every child wears the same clothing, regardless of their family's background.
Another interesting fact:
Education at government schools in Sri Lanka is free, giving children across the country the opportunity to learn and grow.
You may also notice that younger students often wear white shirts with blue shorts or skirts, while many older students wear completely white uniforms. Schools also have their own badges, ties or coloured details.
Sometimes it's these everyday moments that tell the most beautiful stories about a country.

Have you ever tried a Rambutan?
With its bright red, "hairy" shell, it might look a little unusual at first – but that's exactly where its name comes from! The word "Rambutan" comes from the Malay word rambut, meaning "hair."
Inside, you'll find juicy, translucent flesh with a sweet, refreshing flavour, often compared to a mix of lychee and grapes.

Did you know?
✔️ Rambutans are rich in Vitamin C.
✔️ Their season in Sri Lanka is mainly from June to August – making July the perfect time to enjoy them fresh!

Mit seiner leuchtend roten, "haarigen" Schale sieht er auf den ersten Blick etwas außergewöhnlich aus. Tatsächlich stammt sein Name vom malaiischen Wort „rambut“, was „Haar“ bedeutet.
Im Inneren verbirgt sich saftiges, weißes Fruchtfleisch mit einem angenehm süßen und erfrischenden Geschmack – viele vergleichen ihn mit einer Mischung aus Litschi und Weintrauben.

The quieter months in Sri Lanka are our time to prepare for the next season.
While there are fewer guests, there's never less to do.
Windows are cleaned until they sparkle.
Ceiling fans are dusted.
Every room is checked, refreshed and prepared with care.
These are the little things that often go unnoticed, but they make a big difference when you arrive.
For us, hospitality isn't just about offering a room.
It's about creating a place where you immediately feel comfortable and welcome.
Every member of our family helps to keep The FlipFlop ready for our next guests – and we wouldn't have it any other way.
We can't wait to welcome you back to Unawatuna.

Ein Blick hinter die Kulissen
Die ruhigere Nebensaison in Sri Lanka ist für uns die Zeit, unser Guesthouse auf die nächste Saison vorzubereiten.
Auch wenn weniger Gäste da sind, gibt es immer etwas zu tun.
Fenster werden geputzt, bis sie glänzen.
Die Deckenventilatoren werden gereinigt.
Jedes Zimmer wird sorgfältig kontrolliert und mit viel Liebe zum Detail vorbereitet.
Viele dieser Arbeiten bleiben für unsere Gäste unsichtbar – aber genau sie sorgen dafür, dass ihr euch vom ersten Moment an wohlfühlt.
Gastfreundschaft bedeutet für uns nicht nur, ein Zimmer anzubieten.
Sie bedeutet, einen Ort zu schaffen, an dem man gerne ankommt.

If you've been to Sri Lanka before, you probably know this sound...
Every afternoon, the bakery van drives through the neighbourhood, announcing its arrival with its famous melody.
Locals step outside to buy fresh bread, buns and little treats for tea time.
In this video, Sachi's sister is picking up some fresh pastries – just another ordinary afternoon in Unawatuna.
Sometimes it's these little everyday moments that make Sri Lanka so special.

Jeden Nachmittag fährt das Bäckerauto durch die Nachbarschaft und kündigt sich schon von Weitem mit seiner typischen Melodie an.
Dann kommen die Nachbarn heraus und kaufen frisches Brot, Brötchen oder kleine Leckereien für die Teezeit.
