The Silver Cloak of the Ella Mountains: "Kirindi Oya" Flowing Silently Through the Great Forest
Born from the mists of the Uva Mountains and the heart of the fertility of the dry zone of the country, Kirindi Oya is a magnificent creation of nature.
⛰️ The stream that creates the beauty of the falls
The Kirindi Oya gives life to the tourist paradise of "Ella". Flowing at the foot of Ella Rock, creating the 25-meter-high Ravana Falls, this stream is the main attraction that delights the eyes of local and foreign tourists.
📜 Historical Background: The Nourishment of the Rohana Kingdom
Kirindi Oya has a true historical heritage that goes beyond the news of Ravana:
Irrigated Civilization: Kirindi Oya was the main source of water for the Rohana Kingdom even before the Anuradhapura era. This river is credited with feeding the Tissamaharama tank system that fueled the agricultural revolution in Magampattu.
The Shadow of Sinhala Kings: History says that Kirindi Oya contributed greatly to the prosperity of Rohana, where the armies of Sinhala kings including King Dutugemunu were organized.
🐘 A Secret Journey Through the Jungle
Most of the Kirindi Oya flows through dense forests where elephants and wild animals reign.
Wildlife Sanctuary: As it flows through the forest, far from human settlements, it is the only place for rare fish and wild animals to quench their thirst.
Ecological Cleanliness: Since it flows touching the roots of wild medicinal plants, it is believed that this water is very clean and beneficial.
🌾 Benefits and importance to society
Agriculture: The Kirindi Oya is enriching the rice fields of the South by cultivating thousands of acres of paddy fields through the Lunugamvehera project.
Tourism economy: This river also creates the beautiful ecosystem and waterfalls necessary for the tourism industry in the Ella area.
⚠️ Attention! (Social threats)
The course of the river is changing due to the unlimited illegal sand mining.
The ecosystem is being destroyed due to the plastic and polythene thrown by tourists near the waterfalls and river banks.
Let's protect our heritage! 🌿
It is the responsibility of all of us living in Uva and the Southern provinces to protect this great river that runs from Ella to Kirinda.
