For Kalindu, being a ranger is about more than finding wildlife. It is about helping guests look a little closer, notice what might otherwise go unseen, and understand the world unfolding around them.

After two and a half years at Uga Chena Huts, one encounter still stays with him. On a couple’s final safari, a leopard appeared with her cub. It was the first time they had seen one, and for the couple, the sighting became a 50th birthday gift they would never forget.

Growing up surrounded by nature inspired Gayan to become a ranger. Today, as Senior Executive Ranger at Chena Huts, that same curiosity shapes every safari he leads.

This World Ocean Day, we reaffirmed our commitment to protecting the marine ecosystems that are vital to Sri Lanka’s natural heritage and the future of sustainable tourism.

At Jungle Beach an Uga Experience, guests and team members came together for an awareness session exploring local marine biodiversity, the environmental challenges it faces, and the importance of conservation. Meanwhile, Uga Chena Huts took part in a beach clean-up initiative at Kirinda Beach alongside teams from Hilton Yala, Cinnamon Wild Yala, and Jetwing Yala, bringing together around 70 participants in a collective effort to protect our oceans and preserve the beauty of our coastline.

From raising awareness to taking direct action, these initiatives reflect our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and a healthier future for our marine ecosystems.

In recognition of World Environment Day 2026, Uga Chena Huts proudly organized an environmental awareness programme for 76 students of H/Pustholamulla Jayawickrama School at Thissamaharamaya.

In line with this year's theme "Climate Action" the programme included an inspiring climate change awareness session conducted by an officer from the Central Environmental Authority, as well as an educational session topic led by Uga Chena Huts rangers and a poster competition among the students to raise environmental awareness.

To further support environmental education, we donated environment-related books worth approximately LKR 50,000 to the school library, planted 15 trees with the students, and provided name boards for the school’s herbal garden.

Together, we are nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards and working towards a greener future for all
