History of the Tubman Center of African Culture

The Tubman Center of African Culture was established in 1964 in Robertsport, Grand Cape Mount County.

It was built in honor of President William V.S. Tubman on the occasion of his 69th birthday.

Its mission was to serve as both a museum and a research center, dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and celebration of African culture—including artifacts, history, arts, and craft traditions.

Current Condition
The Liberian Civil Wars had negative impacts on the Tubman Culture and Tourism center: it was badly looted, the artifacts lost, the structure abandoned, and it fell into severe disrepair.

Today, the building remains intact yet degraded—encroached by grass.

Authorities have flagged its current state as a significant loss to Liberia’s cultural and educational heritage, with renewed interest in seeking funds for its restoration.

Moral lesson

Value Your Heritage While You Have It and neglect Leads to Loss:

The center was once filled with priceless cultural treasures and knowledge, but much of it was lost during the war. It teaches us that culture, if not protected, can disappear.

The decline of the center shows that when we neglect our cultural institutions, we risk losing history, identity, and pride

In the heart of Robertsport, over the hill there lays a town names uptown with a historic cannon. This canon is believed to have been left behind in the 1940s by U.S. Army troops who were once stationed there during World War II.

In the years that followed, the cannon found a new and joyful purpose. Throughout the 1970s they fire the canon in or across the Lake Piso on special holidays, like Liberia’s Independence Day on July 26th. For the people of Cape Mount, the sound was not one of conflict, but a proud and celebratory reminder of their unity and freedom.

A deeply saddening event occurred on July 26, 1976. During the holiday celebrations, a tragic accident happened the canon accidentally took the life of the man who was in charge of the cannon, Mr. AB Dayan. His passing brought a profound sense of loss to the community.

Out of respect for his memory and the sorrow of that day, the cannon has remained silent up to this day.
It now stands as a quiet monument, not only to history but also to a beloved member of the community. Its presence reminds us of the importance of remembrance.

Moral lessons
Every ruin can be a lesson.
Just as the damaged cannon tells a story, broken things in our lives can guide us if we are willing to listen and learn.

The Robertsport cannon also reminds us that true strength is not in weapons, but in the peace and progress we choose to preserved.
